Car’tune Co’mic

jesus-and-mary-twinsSo I hope everyone has seen this site before – it’s why the internet was invented according to barbryn and I:
http://thischarmingcharlie.tumblr.com

I have nine days left to finish a massive bit of artwork for a major (the major) exhibition of the year around these parts – so what better use of my time – than knuckling down and … and .. and

….faffing about with comic strips.

Monkey gone to Hoobes

Question is, what would you merge?
Does Eeyore pick up the mic and sing Cohen?
Does Andy Capp sing AC/DC?

Give us your wish list
if it’s a bit more obscure show me some links –
‘spill pints for creativity.
Tank Girl has got to work with Kenickie lyrics, right?

  1. Interesting link, hadn’t seen it before, kind of innocence lost?

I suppose the Fabulous Furry Freak brothers and Circulus particularly ‘My Body Is Made of Sunlight’ probably would be too predictable and I’m not going to mention any Neil Gaiman characters 😉

    • innocence lost is true – I felt terrible putting Pixies lyrics to C and H – but it worked (for me) so well.

I think Neil Gaiman characters might sit easier with dark material poring from their mouths… the funnier juxtaposition would be to have ‘Death’ spouting pop lyrics though, wouldn’t it?.

      • that’s true, perhaps a Death/Kylie Minogue mash up or the Sandman himself doing Tiny Tim’s Livin’ in the Sunlight?

I’m trying to think who the Preacher would be good for, some Pet Shop Boys perhaps…

      • Death/Kylie sounds fun –
Tintin is an interesting one, alongside Calvin my favourite character – thinking about your ideas what about Tintin’s Thompson Twins with Pet shop boys lyrics!
Oh this might send me crazy.

  2. I know you’re looking for poignant/deep/insightful juxtapositions, shane, but I feel compelled to post these lyrics, which have always seemed to have a sideways connection to the Peanut world:

Cosmic Charley, how do you do?
Truckin’ in style along the avenue
Dum dee dum dee doodley doo
Go on home, your mother’s calling you

Calico Kahlia, come tell me the news
Calamity’s waiting for a way to get to her
    Rosy red and electric blue
I bought you a paddle for your paper canoe

Say you’ll come back when you can
Whenever your airplane happens to land
Maybe I’ll be back here too
It all depends on what’s with you

Hung up waiting for a windy day
Kite on ice since the first of February
Mama keeps saying that the wind might blow
But standing here, I say I just don’t know

New ones coming as the old ones go
Everything’s moving here, but much too slow now
A little bit quicker and we might have time
To say “How do you do?” before we’re left behind

Calliope wail like a seaside zoo
The very last lately enquired about you
It’s really very one or two
The first you wanted, the last I knew

I just wonder if you shouldn’t feel
Less concern about the deep unreal
The very first word is “How do you do?”
The last “Go home, your mama’s calling you”

    Here’s a suitable tune.

I just wonder if you shouldn’t feel less concern about the deep unreal……

    • just displacement activity Chris – just displacement…..

Amazing how you start looking for something, it really does all fit – Cosmic Charlie really does link in with the Peanuts world….
and it’s not really surprising, is it? when I was young the cartoon section in the newspaper was what my folks collected for us – my grandparents saved theirs for our visits too – so these things became a common language – like the Beano or Dandy it became the first of many choices that defined you – Peanuts or Calvin and Hoobes? Beano or Dandy? Stones or Beatles? Spurs or Arsenal? Mod or Rocker? etc etc etc (insert own era or areas choices) .. the subtle references to comic strip characters in songs are fun to find – well they are to me, I think everyone else thought RR comics was pants.

  3. The Bash Street Kids singing The Who’s My Generation was the first thing that came to mind. Will try to give it some more thought….

  4. Anyone remember Bloom County? I’ve always meant to try to get hold of an anthology, if such a thing exists… For some reason my immediate thought is that it might go well with Suede lyrics…

  5. Well The Cursing Hedgehogs would be perfect material for Peter and the Test Tube Babies. Viivi and Wagner would suit Camera Obscura or Arab Strap, Ballboy, etc. Oh the Moomins would be great with Tenhi lyrics, though maybe we’d have to use Sugarcubes or Björk or even Julian Cope. Sonic Youth could do Love and Rockets. Must. Get.. Back… To…. Work…….

      • Perfect Little My image.

Anyway, I can imagine Moomin Papa and Moomin Mama looking on while Little My rages on:

        and there is no map!
and a compass wouldn’t help at all!

        human behaviour …
there’s definitely, definitely, definitely no logic.

My images are surreal cos I’ve been listening to Here Today, Tomorrow Next Week!

        “I really don’t like lobster!”

    • I was doing Asterix and Obelix last night – they work with both the Jesus and Mary Chain and Primal Scream tracks (I’m stuck in 80/90’s indie because the lyrics pop into my head instantly)…. Je T’Aime (Moi Non Plus) is funny.

  6. I’ve been trying to find an Andy Capp (with Florrie, his missus) cartoon that I could make fit a lyrical snippet from Mark Lanegan & Isobel Campbell’s Come On Over (Turn Me On).

Failed, sadly, and I really MUST do some work.

I appreciate you spending some time and energy

  11. An assignment to visit a bar, sample a beer, purchase a snack and check out the men’s
cloakroom is not most women’s idea of a great shopping trip but getting paid to carry out such an assignment will sound like a good
deal to many men. But television do not provide the same pleasure
of watching a movie as does movie theatre with its huge screen and surround sound system.
