elastic bands – this week: B

arteesane-B-elastic-bands

I made a comment during this weeks RR about: how people who like the same genres can still have wildly different taste inside those labels.

So, here is a game to illustrate either:
How wildly eclectic your taste is… or,
How perfectly streamlined it is.

Rules.
I will post a letter of the alphabet
all BANDS or ARTISTS must begin with that letter.
Artists letter is determined by the letter at the beginning of their SURNAME (if they use it) – ignore the use of ‘The’ in a bands name.
up to 13 songs are allowed – fewer if you wish.
All can be the same artist if that represents you perfectly or all the same genre. Just make them great tunes.

make a youtube playlist and use the Guardian site to link to it or upload your own mixcloud.com playlist – something like that anyway – but just link to it – don’t overload the thread.

Cut and paste the band name and track (in a joyous list style).
Then we can chat about the choices – add some comments if you wish (about how narrow or varied those choices are) … but above all, have fun.

THIS WEEKS LETTER IS: B

  1. What a fabulous idea saneshane (awesome artwork too).

I’ll prepare a playlist but probably won’t get to post it till later this week but it will encompass Barclay James Harvest, BOC, Band of Skulls, Biffy Clyro, (The) Black Keys, Bruce Springsteen (?), Band of Joy, (The) Big Pink and possibly even some Beyoncé.

    • as anonymous points out bellow – do we go with the beginning of the surname as the letter of choice?
… or are you voting as forename to be the one counted (as in Bruce) – I’m not one to alphabetically order things – so I don’t know what the majority opinion would be.

      please help.

      • Noticed you reply to anon; my initial thought was to follow i-tunes but it makes more sense to go with surnames as you suggest below.

Scrub Bruce then from the B’s but can we have a ruling on “The” as I think they shouldn’t go in the T’s unless it’s The The!

      • My ruling on the is to ignore it and go with whatever starts the second word – so ‘the the’ would be in T’s – but The Beatles would be in the B’s.

I only say this because some bands use started using ‘The’ but then cut it from their names making a whole extra confusion.

We are going with surname then – I shall edit.

  2. So many B’s to choose Kate of course, Budgie, Black Sabs, ( Beefheart & British Sea Power I know too few of to list) ( brother just back from Helsinki ) but I shall go for Bill Bruford .. who has given such pleasure .. A Vic Reeves fave methinks too

From Yes ..Something’s Coming from the BBC, Perpetual Change from Yessongs, then over to Crimson with Starless and Discipline to his own band with Feels Good to Me, Flags with Moraz and with Squire on Silently Falling back to AWHB for Themes & something from the Earthworks … but having started the list I can’t find the album with Holdsworth Stewart et al that was super, Sahara something … am searching frantically for that … came free with his excellent autobiog

  3. I am a bear of very little brain and I shall wait for a few people to post something so I can work out quite what I’m supposed to do. Duh.

    • pick up to 13 songs
artist (surname) or band name must begin with B.

      list your choices.
see how eclectic (or not) that your favourite bands are.
make a playlist somewhere and link to it.. (if you wish).

I’m not very good with being clear.

  4. I simply don’t have time to do a playlist – horribly behind with heaps of work – but the list of artists that comes immediately to mind includes the Bangles, Kate Bush, Peter Broetzmann, Brockdorff Klang Labor, Barclay James Harvest, the Bluetones, Black Sabbath…

  5. DarceysDad :February 19, 2014 at 10:19 pm

    Missy B?
Didn’t have you down as a rap fan, Maki!

    ***********************************************

DsD – 🙂 She’s not there, but Maki Towers filters out no genres!

  6. I’m feeling in a rather dark mood tonight (have been ostracised by my girls this evening and had to apologise for my behaviour – don’t ask), so I think I’ll give you a Black playlist:

    Black Sabbath – Loner
    Black Mountain – Tyrants
    Black Crowes – Evil Eye
Black Diamond Bay – Blue Mace
Black – Learning How To Hate
    Black Heart Procession – Tangled
Blackberry Smoke – Ain’t Much Left Of Me
Black Country Communion – Song Of Yesterday
Black Strobe – Not What You Need
Blackfield – My Gift Of Silence
    Blackfoot – Highway Song

No-one needs to wallow through that as a YT playlist, so I’ll get back to my admin instead.

  7. Peter Brötzmann – Large Hadron Collider
    The Band – The Weight
    Boards of Canada – Roygbiv
Breathless – You’re All That Matters Now
    Vashti Bunyan – Diamond Day
    Anthony Braxton – B-Xo/N-O-1-47a
    Tim Buckley – Morning Glory
    Bark Psychosis – Miss Abuse
The Bible – Honey Be Good
    The Beautiful South – 36D
    Carla Bruni – Quelqu’un m’a dit

    • that Breathless is beautiful – I have the ‘glass bead game’ album (that I love) but never followed it up with any more – he sang on some ‘this mortal coil’ didn’t he?

How many albums did Breathless release?
(I’ll be getting some more I think)
      where should I start?

      • Yeah he sang “I Am The Cosmos” on Blood (my favourite TMC album) and a couple on Filigree & Shadow as well. Breathless are great and are still going, although you wouldn’t know it from the zero amount of press coverage they get. Mind you, they don’t go out of their way to court publicity either, every few years they put out another album of windswept, desolate art rock which just sinks without trace. But they’re big in Italy, apparently. My favourite album of theirs is Between Happiness & Heartache, with Blue Moon running it a close second.

    • Less of a reply, more of an edit, really. My list is influenced by what I can actually access on youtube (LOADS of music vids are not available in Germany) and here it is in written form because I’m liking that the rest of you have offered this service!

Basia Bulat – Promise Not To Think About Love
Beirut – Mount Wroclai (Idle ays)
Billy Bragg – Levi Stubbs’ Tears
Björk – It’s Oh So Quiet
the Breeders – Drivin’ On 9
Al Bowlly – The Very Thought Of You
Blood, Sweat & Tears – And When I Die
      Blaudzun – Heavy Flowers
      the Box – Time
Eric Bibb – In My Father’s House
      Bellowhead – Cross-Eyed And Chinless

Thanks for setting this up, Shane!

  8. Well, here’s me at 2:05 and suffering from insomnia.

    Ballboy (12)
    Black Keys (9)
    Beck (8)
    David Bowie (8)
    Bauhaus (7)

    Beastie Boys (5)

    • bauhaus and ballboy fill up my little car iPod almost on their own.

cheers for replacing some of my lost 2bears – I tried sending you an email but accidentally deleted it – then tried again and obviously sent it to a defunct account.
was rushing off to London before the weekend to retrace the steps of where me and the Ms. met 11 years ago (by the Boudicca statue on Westminster bridge during the anti war march) did her a CD that started with the Wolfgang Press and 11 years (she doesn’t listen to lyrics – so all the effort I put in to have songs that mention 11 was wasted) – BUT BUT we made it to the point where I COULD put 11 years on a comp. It made me very happy.

  10. I’ve made list, I’ve found the youtube links, but now realise that I have no idea how to a) link them into a youtube playlist or b) post a link to it on here…..simple instructions very much welcomed.

    • I don’t know the ‘real’ way to do it (is there an approved version?) so I just copy the link into a Grauniad comments box, then copy the whole thing over here…

    • on youtube – go to your first track and underneath where it say: (…) views and the thumbs up thumbs down symbol – there’s the words ADD TO

click on Add To – a little extra box comes up with a section that says: enter playlist name
type in ‘Suzi’s elastic B bands” or something and make sure it’s public.
then click on the ‘Create playlist‘ box.

go to you next video – click ADD TO – and click it in the ‘Suzi’s elastic B bands’ playlist..
continue through the videos until they are all done.

when you are finished click on you youtube user name in the top right hand corner and your playlists should scroll across the top.

click on ‘Suzi’s elastic B bands’ press ‘play all’ and cut the youtube link from the top – put this in a link using the guardian comment box – cut it from there and paste it in the ‘spill comment box.

it flows quite easily when you get going.

  11. I’ll just post the titles anyway – most of it is pretty well-known, just some personal favourites more or less in the order that they came to mind…

Bizet – Habanera from Carmen sung by Carmen Monarcha
    David Bowie – Rebel, Rebel
    Beatles – Strawberry Fields
Jaques Brel – Je Suis Un Soir D’Ete
Jonathan Byrd – May The River Run Dry
    Black Sabbath – Paranoid
Billy Bragg – Between The Wars
Big Brother and the Holding Company – Piece Of My Heart
    Bellowhead – Fakenham Fair
Beautiful South – Don’t Marry Her (unexpurgated version)
    Blondie – Picture This
Dave Brubeck Quartert – Blue Rondo A La Turk

    • niiiiice set, wile – was listening to Step It Up (feat. Alice Russell) by The Bamboos this morning and found it perking up my morning – cheers.
Will give the whole lot a proper listen through – (when I’ve bloody well narrowed down MY list) – you are all distracting me with ace tunes.

  12. I’ve no idea how to do a youtube list, I’m afraid. Presumably you have to have an account? Oh well. Here’s a few I’d put on such a list if I could:

Band of Holy Joy: Evening World Holiday Show
    David Bowie: Drive-In Saturday
    Jacques Brel: J’Arrive
Broken Family Band: Walking Back To Jesus, Part II
Belle & Sebastian: A Century of Fakers
The Beautiful South: I’ll Sail This Ship Alone
    Belly: Now They’ll Sleep
Billy Bragg: Cindy of 1000 Lives
    Blur: On Your Own
    Black: Feel Like Change
    Blue Nile: The Downtown Lights
    Boy George: Il Adore
    The Bible: Honey Be Good

    • I’ve replied to suzi up above about how to create a list – I guess you do have to have an account.

But this is great anyway – interesting selection – I always presume you are going to be ‘perkier’ in your choices – I don’t know why – probably because you come across as quite chipper in your writing style .. I think the same of barbryn… he always seams breezy in comments – then recommends intense Scandinavians talking about death (disguised by pop chords) – heehee.
This is not a criticism – I love soul searching tracks and the pleasure of them being unexpected.

      • Thanks Shane! OK, let’s try this:

        bish’s elastic B bands

I’ve replaced Evening World Holiday Show with Bitten Lips and Walking Back to Jesus with It’s All Over as I couldn’t be doing with scrappy live versions recorded off iPhones. I suppose there is quite a lot of mournful stuff there!

  13. Here’s a playlist from me. A fairly obvious list of names, mostly – not necessarily my favourite songs of theirs, just ones that seemed right:

    B list LINK

    Blitzen Trapper – Furr
The Byrds – Wasn’t Born To Follow
The Beach Boys – Surf’s Up
The Boo Radleys – Barney (…and Me)
    Blur – Best Days
Belle & Sebastian – Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying
Bonnie “Prince” Billie – I See A Darkness
    Jeff Buckley – So Real
    Belly – Low Red Moon
    Bright Eyes – Land-Locked Blues
    British Sea Power – Carrion
The Beatles – Long Long Long
Black Box Recorder – Goodnight Kiss

      • Interesting how much crossover we have: Blur, B&S, Belly… And I nearly included “What’s In The Box?” by The Boo Radleys and had considered Bonnie “Prince” Billy but couldn’t decide on a track (LOVE “I See A Darkness” but prefer Johnny Cash’s take).

    • Correct. I might easily have included The Beautiful South and Billy Bragg from your list. Baez and Blondie should probably have been in there too.

      • Just had a listen through. Some lovely stuff. Particularly taken with that Bowie-esque track from British Sea Power. Never heard it (or them) before – will have to do some investigating…

  14. So, here is a link to my list

    Beth’s B songs

    1. Bauhaus
    2. Bat For Lashes
    3. Bowie
    4. Birthday Party
    5. Black Moth
    6. Brain Donor
    7. Berlin Black and the Shades of Grey
    8. Blixa Bargeld
    9. Devendra Banhart
    10. Black Veil Brides
    11. Blind Mr Jones
    12. Joan Baez
    13. Tim Buckley

I didn’t look at anyone else’s, will do now, hope someone enjoys it, I had fun making it
please delete the first link, it didn’t work, thanks 🙂

  15. Not being a huge fan of thinking about music in terms of genres or, indeed, of making lists, I’ll just say that my ‘B’ artists would probably contain tracks by: JS Bach, Badly Drawn Boy, The Band, The Beatles, Beck, Belly, The Beta Band, Blondie, The Byrds, David Byrne and possibly Biffy Clyro.
I don’t think that qualifies as ‘eclectic’ but I know someone who would say it’s not very ‘balanced’.

    • obviously it’s a game for people that enjoy making lists – I thought there had been a lack of such frivolity since tinny’s a-z game finished…

There’s 5 of those bands that could easily be in my top picks.
I’m finding the major bands I really ‘like’ starting with B are limited in their variety or eclectic-ness – if I did a collection using bands with fewer tracks from my iTunes, the variety is much more pronounced.

Cheers for playing to that extent – I’m fascinated by differences in taste (or similarities) – not in the labelling of the genres.

  16. Ballboy I’ve Got Pictures Of You In Your Underwear
    Bauhaus Harry
    Brakes The Most Fun
    Bhundu Boys Une Shuwa Here
    Black Grape Shake Your Money
The Blanche Hudson Weekend (Just like) Susan George
    Buck 65 Bandits
    Big Audio Dynamite Medicine Show
    Blondie One way or another
    Bongwater Talent Is A Vampire
    Björk Bachelorette (strings version)
    Bright Eyes Waste Of Paint
The Beat Whine and grine/Stand Down Margaret

    elastic B bands from saneshane

    • This has been a great idea, thanks, saneshane, and thanks again for the instructions. I’m someone who can really only learn something by doing it, so I followed them step by step, and hey presto! it worked. Hope there will be some more contributions – although when am I going to find time to listen? – will try!! – and am already thinking about an Elastic Band C list for next week….that’s if there’s going to be one? And is there going to be an A list?

      • if people are happy to play – then I will add a new letter each week as a new series – not in order though – I like random.

(and it keeps you lot on your toes)….

trouble is; it WILL cost me a fortune – already lined up a couple of Breathless albums thanks to this week.

  17. Back with my B-List:

The Black Keys – Gold On The Ceiling
    Kate Bush – Cloudbusting

Bon Jovi – Living on a Prayer
Bowling For Soup – Girl All The Bad Guys Want
    Band Of Skulls – Bruises
Band of Joy – Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down

    Eclectic, possibly, varied, definitely.

    Playlist – Fingers crossed

Bhundu Boys – Baba Muninin Francis
    Blondie – In The Flesh
    Bjork – Human Behaviour
Burning Spear – Man In The Hills

    David Bowie – Bewlay Brothers
    Junior Byles – Curly Locks
The Beat – All Out To get You
The Beatles – Here There And Everywhere

    Here it is.

  19. Great idea and some great lists; I think mine is a bit predictable but then … I’m me.

    Aloe Blacc – I Need A Dollar
Anne Briggs – The Snows They Melt The Soonest
    Beck – Devil’s Haircut
    Blanck Mass – Sundowner
Blue Oyster Cult – Don’t Fear The Reaper

    Duncan Browne – Journey
    Joe Bonamassa – Slow Train

    The Black-Eyed Peas – I’ve Gotta Feeling

I think this is a link: Click here to view Elastic Bands B.

    • sorry Ali – I cleaned it up and added it to your original post – the contrast in link colours isn’t very good with this wordpress theme – not trying to send you crazy – honest.

  20. This was fun to do and most people’s lists seem pretty eclectic to me. Here’s mine:

    The Playlist

    Boris – Statement

  22. late to the party as ever. my head is elsewhere these days, and i can’t see youtube media right now, but a few that i don’t see (sorry for any repeats) –

Babes in Toyland – Sweet 69
    Breeders – Cannonball
    Beck – Lost Cause
Black Angels – Don’t Play with Guns
Black Lips – Ain’t Coming Back
Band of Gypsies – Machine Gun

Edie Brickell – What I Am
    Bronski Beat – Smalltown Boy
Brothers Johnson – Get the Funk Outta My Face
James Brown – Doin it to Death

    • Lost Cause was on an earlier version of my list. As were the Bangles (though I was gonna opt for Manic Monday). As was Beyonce (though I was going for Single Ladies). So all in all, I approve! And am happy to see you here, late or otherwise!

    • Hi amylee, had a Beyoncé track too but could easily have chosen your suggestion or even bishbosh’s or perhaps If I Was A Boy.

Completely overlooked The Bangles ( head slap) and second Eternal Flame and Blondie 😦

Hope all is well tho’ I sense you have a lot on so all the best.

      • i got the wrong Blondie song – Fade Away and Radiate is my very favorite. But as an old person whose memory sucks, i couldn’t put my finger on it at the moment. (Crazy in Love is probably the only Beyonce track i can deal with. And even then it’s only because of hubby.)
And of course i’m glad to see you both, an all.

  23. I culled tracks on the laptop recently. These bees survived the colony collapse: Blondie (Autoamerican is one of the great eclectic albums), Beastmilk, Black Magic Six, James Blake, Bonobo, Belleruche, Burial, Big Black, Barry Andrewsin Disco, Black Twig, Boards of Canada, Darrell Banks. Erykah Badu.

No time to make a list.

    • Gah! I’ve thought of a million B-artists since I posted this … Bodines, British Sea Power …

Anyway, seems that I could’ve used this to post some songs for RRSA Faces. Blondie – Faces; Beastmilk – Wind Blows Through Their Skulls; Big Black – Passing Complexion; Black Magic Six – Beaver Killer … Ah well! Next time.

  24. and btw Shane, i like this game. Was kind of feeling the need for a new one to look forward too. I didn’t have the brains for the movie one. Is this going to be a regularly scheduled game?

    • yep – I’ll put it up weekly as it seams to have gone down well – random letters so the answers are a bit more off the cuff.

I will put it up on a Tuesday or Wednesday – whatever day is best for everyone.

Love the last few lists too – sorry to be a bit slack in any responses – just huge amount of business paperwork sh*t piled up – considering I’m down to a couple of proper days work a week I’m actually more snowed under than before.

Anyway – love all the lists – however they have been formatted – and a fascinating insight into the taste of spillers. cool stuff.

The really good thing is I can put on a random playlist from people who don’t normally do such things.

      cheers everyone.

      • cheers for putting up the game, I’ve enjoyed listening to other people’s lists too and looking forward to the next one, Wednesday’s better for me 🙂

      • i think mixing up the letters is a good thing too, that way we’re not all prepared for the next week with list in hand. More fun i think to grab tunes off the cuff for whatever letter shows up.

  25. Bah! Saw this earlier in the week and meant to get onto it. Got sidetracked and forgot all about it ’till tonight. Will try to do a Youtube list before Wednesday, until then this is my list in no particular order. Some are in my media player, but some of the older ones are only in my head.

    Band (The)………………………………………….”Rag Mama Rag”>
    Bread……………………………………………………….”Make It With You”.
    Beanfield…………………………………………………..”Charles”.
    Buffalo Springfield……………………………………..”For What It’s Worth”.
    Badly Drawn Boy……………………………………….”Another Pearl”.
    Beach Boys………………………………………………”Good Vibrations”.
    Big Country……………………………………………….”Look Away”.
    Bjork…………………………………………………………”Venus As A Boy”.
    Blondie………………………………………………………”Atomic”.
    Bonzo’s……………………………………………………..”Death Cab For Cutie”.
    Black Sabbath…………………………………………….”Paranoid”.
    Barenaked Ladies……………………………………….”Big Bang Theory”. (Theme).
    Basement Jaxx……………………………………………”Where’s Your Head At”.

  26. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why won’t right click let me cut the playlist from my RR comments box?
I’ve followed all of shane’s instructions and got as far as making the list and cutting it into the RR box. But the drop down menu on right click does not show the cut and paste options.

      • so to do that – in the guardian’s box:

        first type:
        bluepeter’s b’s
go to the youtude window and copy the playlist address

go back to the Guardians box; highlight bluepeter’s B – then click on the LINK box and paste in the copied address.

click on preview and you will see a blue link: bluepeter’s B.

close preview and highlight the whole thing. .. click CUT (however this is normally done on your computer) this removes it from accidentally posting in the RR thread.

Come over to the spill and paste it in a comment box here.

        click post comment

(and if anything mucks up – swear at the screen – that’s what I do anyway)
