elastic bands – this week: P

A game to illustrate either:
How wildly eclectic your taste is… or,
How perfectly streamlined it is.

I will post a letter of the alphabet
all BANDS or ARTISTS must begin with that letter.
Artists letter is determined by the letter at the beginning of their SURNAME (if they use it) – ignore the use of ‘The’ in a bands name.
up to 13 songs are allowed – fewer if you wish.
All can be the same artist if that represents you perfectly or all the same genre. Just make them great tunes.

make a youtube playlist (if you wish) and link to it – just link to it – don’t overload the thread.

Cut and paste the band names and tracks (in a joyous list style) in the comments.
Then we can chat about the choices – add some waffle if you wish (about how narrow or varied those choices are) … but above all, have fun.

      • Now I see that. This morning it was dark and I’m far too colourblind to pick colours in the dark. BTW I’ll do a proper list and play by the rules if I have time, but shouting out the first names I come across is easier. Last week I used the laptop’s library, this week it was CDs on the shelf, next week I’ll look through the cassettes.

      • I had first pick, but it’s great when the first sounds you come across are liked by others. A quick look at other CDs to see if there any leftovers not mentioned below reveals … ha … Parquet Courts, Pigbag, Pharoah Sanders (last two on comps), Pizzicato Five, Popsicle (Brit pop before Brit pop, but from Sweden), Processory. Pychic Warriors Ov Gaia, Pioneers (two more from comps), The Passions, Pop Will Eat Itself, jamie Principle… That’s not a bad 10 either.

BTW Inspired by you, I nommed Shine a Light for RRSA Faces. 😉 Was great to listen to it. Hadn’t done so for … about a month.

      • Long time ago Blimpy posted a gorgeous tune by a band called (i think) The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Can’t remember the name of the tune, but i do hate that some bands feel like they have to have twattish names. (cf. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Casiatone for the Painfully Alone…)

      • Crap is maybe in the eye of the beholder. I rather like names like ‘At swim two birds’ and ‘Kids with Biblical names’ ;-}

      • I should have said long twattish names. I see nothing wrong with Echo and the Bunnymen, that’s the same to me as Martha and the Vandellas or Tommy James and the Shondells. The Teardrop Explodes is short.

Speaking of Blimpy, wonder if anyone has put up the Pictish Trail.

I thought you and Ubu got my Pixies tunes, and i knew Shane was going to put up Cactus. But I forgot about Here Comes Your Man. So that goes on my listie too.

  1. Well, the first names that spring to mind for me are Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Pixies, Pink Floyd, Gram Parsons, The Pogues, The Portico Quartet, Porcupine Tree, Pulp, Prince and Primal Scream.

I shall come back with a list later today.

    • I had a feeling someone else would be selecting Mr Plant and Pink Floyd, didn’t think we’d share Primal Scream too, look forward to your list:-)

  2. Okeydokie here’s what I came up with , managed to do a Youtube list too ( for most of them) !

    Patti Page – Tennessee Waltz
The Pancakes – Far too fast
    Pere Ubu – Final Solution
The Paragons – The tide is high
    Pansy Division – Bunnies (NSFW)
    Plastics – I am plastic
Phil and the Frantics – I must run
Pink Floyd – See Emily play
The Pixies – Monkey gone to Heaven
The Potatomen- That Girl ( had to substitute The Queers version as original not on Youtube)
Prince Buster – Stir the pot ( contains mild innuendo and scenes of a pot stirring nature)
Puffy ( Amiyummi) – Sunday in the park

    Linky – http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhoZIWMYC_2OrT3wuT5o6aY6LgH2Sgo9H&feature=edit_ok

    • dond for Puke, Spit and Guts – i think i remember being utterly charmed by that one when you posted it on the mothership. And you got my Pixies pick, do there’s another dond.

    How many’s that?

  4. Well, P was surprisingly hard to fill up (compared to B anyway). But here are mine (in no particular order). I’ll put together a youtube list laterz.

I’m counting on others to make up for the lack of Pixies, Pretenders and Pet Shop Boys.

Plan B – Stay Too Long
The Playthings – Stop What Your Doing
Wilson Pickett – Get Me Back On Time Engine No. 9
Esther Phillips -‘Till My Back Ain’t Got No Bone
Pucho & the Latin Soul Brothers – Got Myself A Good Man
Parliament – Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Off The Sucker)
The Pointer Sisters – Don’t It Drive You Crazy (Guess the sample 1)

Prince Fatty (ft Little Roy & Alcapone) – Still Wanna Love You
Lee Perry – People Funny Boy
Augustus Pablo – Up Warrika Hill
    Puressence – Bitter Pill

      • Well done webcore! I’ve never seen the video before today – PD videos always make me smile. Nearly went for a full-on funk list too – loads of funky Peas to pick out there.

      • Just had a look and it says Jon Dennis listed it for Songs About Books. Didn’t think I’d seen it in any of webcore’s lists. Or am I missing something?
        Love your Parliaments choice btw.

      • Did I not send you that with my NS collections? … Hmmm. Ah that was Don’t Be Sore At Me. Love your Parliament choice. Could we get George Clinton into every list? Got a good one for X.

Oh and JD did list it but webcore really liked it.

  8. OK, here is my Baker’s Dozen of P songs;

    The Pipettes – Pull Shapes
Pixies – Monkey Gone To Heaven
The Pogues – A Rainy Night In Soho
    Tom Petty – Refugee
    Robert Plant – Heaven Knows
    Pulp – Babies
The Puppini Sisters – Crazy In Love
Gram Parsons – Streets of Baltimore
    Jimmy Page – Hummingbird
Pink Floyd Set the Controls For The Heart Of The Sun
Billy Paul – Me and Mrs Jones
    Madeleine Peyroux – Careless Love
Prince – I Wanna Be Your Lover

  9. P, a pretty perfunctory proposition:
Pavement, Pavement, Pavement, Pink Floyd (Piper), Primal Scream (Vanishing Point), Pretenders (Brass), Police (moon, bottle), Robert Palmer (Sneakin’ Sally…), Pointer Sisters (I Am So Excited).
And, if not filed under ‘H’, Peej, Peej, Peej.

  10. As bish has said, it’s a bit harder this week. Took a bit of mental digging and half of these are not in my music files. Some are also favourites of Mrs.bluepeter. Will do a play list when I can but busy with painting and golf – (not at the same time) – for the next few days.

Pink Floyd – Coming Back to Life.
    Porcupine Tree – Time Flies.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra – Prelude and Yodel.
Arvo Part – Spiegel im Spiegel.
Pigeon Detectives – Keep on Your Dress.
    Proclaimers – 500 Miles.
Procul Harem – Whiter Shade of Pale.
    Pulp – Common People.
    Pet Shop Boys – It’s a Sin.
Robert Palmer She Makes My Day.
Gene Pitney – 24 Hours From Tulsa.
    Puccini – Madam Butterfly.

      • I have the Division Bell, but don’t listen to it much, you have inspired me to give it another go, dond for Porcupine Tree too.

    • wow – painting the golf

it’s got to be VW orange (with flames) wider wheel and arches, souped up body kit and some go faster stripes – then you can join the lads around Great Yarmouth for some donuts.

      oh my mistake.

      • Guy has his house painted by a contractor. It’s not finished so he phones them. “You forgot to paint the porch”. The boss sends a young kid round to finish the job. When he gets back the boss asks how it went. “Yea it was O.K. Except it wasn’t a Porsche it was a BMW”.

    • I didn’t look at anybody else’s lists first and now see that we’ve coincided with 4 artists, although with different songs. But how could I have forgotten the Pet Shop Boys – except I would have listed exactly the same one as you did!

  11. Here’s a Perfect P Playlist from me (hope the link works). It was a bit harder than B, less bands I love a lot, but these are 13 that make my list

    1. Pale Saints
    2. Psychotica
    3. Pink Floyd
    4. Pentangle
    5. Robert Plant
    6. Portishead
    8. Phoenix & the Oracle of Zahyrus (aka Phoenix and the Oracle)
    9. Primal Scream
    10. Play Dead
    11. Porno For Pyros
    12. Placebo
    13. Psychedelic Furs

Now to check out everyone else’s lists 🙂

    • I toyed with the Psychedelic Furs too – I have a (possibly slightly weird) love for the “minor hit” All That Money Wants. And I might’ve chosen Pure Morning if DsD hadn’t already (and if I didn’t already look enough of a copycat for This Is Hardcore!). Fab list.

      • Thanks! Glad you liked it, I didn’t look at other people’s lists before doing mine, so I kind of cheated. Pure Morning was the song that moved me from quite liking Placebo to getting them, so it had to be that one for me. I got into Psychedelic Furs in their later (everyone else thinks less good) period, so I tend to like their less venerated songs, but Heaven lovely.

    • good to see another choice for Play Dead! strange old band, they had some very good moments but were never my favourites yet i think i have more records by them than anyone bar the smiths. i think it’s because their sleeve covers were really good.

      • That sounds like me and Gene Loves Jezebel, I love a couple of songs, but admit a lot of it is not so good, however, I own loads of their records because I feel sorry for them if I see them in a charity shop.

I don’t know much by Play Dead, but I like what I’ve heard.

      • ooh, I do like that, thanks for the link and for suggesting it. Kind of like Fever Ray and Coco Rosie mixed up, I’ll check her out 🙂

  12. great lists. Donds for all Prince, Phosphorescent, the Floyd, Furs, Porno for Pyros, Plant, Avro Part, Pavement, Pentangle, Pogues, Iggy, Ann Peebles, PIL, i think i probably got nothing left.

And nice try Chris, but Peej is H.

    Lessee –

Parliament – Tear the Roof off the Sucker
Public Enemy – Fight the Power
Peter and the Test Tube Babies – Transvestite
Primus – Wynonnas Big Brown Beaver
    Pavement – Summer Babe
Parquet Courts – Stoned and Starving
    Pretenders – Lovers of Today
Pogues – Turkish Song of the Damned
    Prince – Gett Off
Power Station – Some Like it Hot
Psychedelic Furs – The Ghost in You
    Pink Floyd – Hey You
Police – Walking on the Moon
    Pentangle – Hunting Song

    • oh, i forgot Pulp – Weeds II (The origin of species)

i think there’s going to be a lot of this sort of thing with this game. I’m still kicking myself for forgetting B-52s, Kurtis Blow, and Bellrays from last week.

      • Gosh, two votes for the Power Station, perhaps it is time for a re-evaluation (for me, I was never very impressed)? I saw Primus supporting Jane’s Addiction once, so much bass!

      • I don’t think you’re missing a lot with the Power Station. It’s probably just a (not so) guilty pleasure for me and DsD. I did get the wrong Prince tune though, i should have put up Let’s Go Crazy because i never got to nom it on the mothership, it was zedded well before my time.

  13. I got a Facebook popup alert from Bethnoir alerting me to this game, which surprised me no end. Bethnoir is on my Facebook? Saneshane is still around? There’s still an internet? I have Facebook on my phone?

Here’s Paul Butterfield for your P collection. Line them up next to the Grateful Dead.and its hard not to admit that, sometimes. drugs work.

    • I thought I’d see what happened if I used the twitter link at the bottom of the page here, was that where the notification came from? It came up with your name in the link, which surprised me too, has no one ever tweeted about a page here before? 😉

    • Hi tinny, nice choice but you’re a week behind, “B’s” were so last week 🙂

As per saneshane’s instructions it’s artist Surname.

Best wishes and good to see you posting.

    • billy Preston. that’s the way god planned it. methinks
I also think Steve Wilson may be in a band starting with P but their name won’t stick in me head
nowt to do with music. .. but highly recommended as me lad is watching it this very moment. .. go on YouTube and try
Pib and Pob. violence for kiddi-winks

      • Steve Wilson is (was) the founder of Porcupine Tree. They have all now gone off in different directions. Wilson now concentrates on collaborations and solo recordings such as “Storm Corrosion” with Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth and “The Raven That Refused to Sing” as a solo project.

      • We saw Steven Wilson in Bristol late last year when he was touring The Raven That Refused To sing.

He was brilliant. I agree with Beth that his work with Opeth is amazing stuff. More people need to know about his music.

  15. P list

pale fountains – from across the kitchen table

  16. Pearl Jam: obviously! I recall nominating 5 or 6 of their songs for Tinny’s A to Z list ( good to see you popping in btw 🙂 ) I’ll take two places for them with Once and Alive oh go on a third Daughter; I could go on.
Placebo – everyone else’s noms are duly donded so I’ll go with Black Eyed
Psychedelic Furs – Pretty in Pink

I Still Feel The Same Pony Club
Truth about cats and dogs Pony Up!
Rebel Without A Pause Public Enemy

    • i was close to picking range life, a song where the out of tune voice cracking moments are the best bits, perhaps the perfect anti X factor track. i thought you might choose nimrod’s son given the post about come on pilgrim in the favourite albums thread. gotta love cactus though. and i nearly chose the Howling too.

      • Hey – Nimrod’s son – U-mass – Cactus – Monkey – Gigantic – Bone Machine – Break My Body
Where Is My Mind?- The Holiday Song- I’ve Been Tired – Levitate Me etc etc depends what I’m screaming when I type.

Cactus particularly appeals because it ties in (in my mind) with the book Five Gates of Hell by Rupert Thomson – there’s a obsessive blood thing – I like that.

  19. I did a whole playlist yesterday and then my server crashed. I still have it, but it now has loads of duplicates on it….time to start from scratch…!

  20. OK, here’s version 2, and I think I might like it better even if it is a wee bit noisier!

    Perfume – Polyrhythm
    Pig Destroyer – Piss Angel
    Perfect Pussy – Driver
Pets on Prozac – Let Your Feet Stomp
    Pissed Jeans – Boring Girls
Piano Magic – Music Won’t Save You From Anything But Silence
Propagandhi – Stick the Fucking Flag Up Your Goddam Ass You Sonofabitch
    Pecadiloes – USSO
    Peaking Lights – Beautiful Son
    Pelican – Immutable Dusk
    Polythene – Kill Techno
    Charlie Parker – Parker’s Mood
    Pocahaunted – Echolocation

  21. Gene Pitney – Something’s Gotten Hold Of My Heart
    Pink Floyd – Brain Damage
Karine Polwart – Painted It White
Pentangle – Sally Go Round The Roses
Elvis Presley – Hard Headed Woman
Maddy Prior and the Girls – I Need You To Turn To
Planxty – Sweet Thames Run Softly
Penguin Cafe Orchestra – Penguin Cafe Single
    Edith Piaf – Milord
    Pogues – Thousands Are Sailing
    Proclaimers – Letter From America
    Poozies – Neptune
Robert Plant (with Alison Krauss) Please Read The Letter

  22. Yes, that’s Kate Rusby singing on ‘Neptune’. I really wanted ‘Sorrows Away’ but no video link available. That would also have been good for A Cappella Songs, if I’d thought of it. From their Infinite Blue album released when Kate was one of the band.

  23. Late to the party. Couldn’t decide if Pluto begins with P or is he officially a Shervington. Left out Pink Floyd as I couldn’t pick just the one track unless it was Echoes which is a bit long for putting on a playlist. It won’t play nicely with the others. Tried to avoid duplication with other folks’ lists and failed. Hon mentions for I Pop, E Presley, G Pitney, Pet Shop Boys, Penetration, The Piranhas, A Pablo, M Peyroux, Procol Harum and Pop Will Eat Itself.

Edith Piaf – Les Trois Cloches
    Pere Ubu – Laughing
Freda Payne – Band of Gold
    Public Image Ltd – Poptones
Lee Perry – Baffling Smoke Signal
    Graham Parker – Hotel Chambermaid
    The Penguins – Earth Angel
    Primitives – Crash
Puppini Sisters – Walk Like an Egyptian
Pogues – A Pair of Brown Eyes
    Part Chimp – Ex Ladyboy
Pentangle – Sally Go Round the Roses
    Prince – Kiss

    • I was completely ignorant to whom the penguins where – so I’ve just been transported to a distinct time and a place listening to ‘the very best of’ cheers for that – out of my normal listening habits; but a treat.
That is a pretty eclectic list – even by ‘spillers standards.

      • Thanks. I was worried that some of it was too obvious. I love The Penguins (in a platonic way of course) and Earth Angel is probably my favourite Doo Wop record. Well, along with The Orioles “It’s Too Soon To Know” and one or two others.

  24. Even later! Not sure if I really understand the idea here, but here’s my eclectic Peas (sorry if they duplicate others’):

Pretty Things – Rainin’ in my heart
    Pocahaunted – Silk fog traveller
Preservation hall jazz band – Lif’s complicated
    Professor Longhair – Big Chief
Prefab sprout – Cars and girls
    Porcupine tree – Blackest eyes
Peaking lights = all the sun that shines
    Portishead – Glory hole
Prisonnaires – Walking in the rain

Now off to listen to some of the other pleasures…

    • the idea is just to see what comes up in your head for each letter.
I started it because I wondered if peoples taste felt eclectic or focused in style when given a particular letter.

With this _ I really could just fill half the tracks up with Pixies numbers… I expect with some letters others will do the same.

I’m loving what comes up often in each others lists and what is unique to individuals.

      • mmm, my B list was just what came into my head – the P one was a bit more considered, which is probably the wrong thing to do (often there’s too much choice from each artist so ‘first one that comes into head’ seems a good plan! Are you allowed to list more than one song from the same artist on each list? Because I can think of one letter for which I’d probably fill up the list with just two artists!!

        • yep – TFD could have all 13 tracks from Tom Petty (if she wished) – G could be a struggle for Chris to fill etc.

I think it says just as much about the choices of tracks if an artist gets repeated – no need to struggle if AC/DC are all you want when we do A. heehee.

  25. I’ll have a P, please Bob: Current Shoephone top tallies for P:

    Pixies (27)
    Lee “Scratch” Perry (14)
    Portishead (14)
    Primus (9)
    Public Image Ltd. (8)
    Prefab Sprout (6)
    Psychedelic Furs (6)
    Pink Floyd (5)
    Primal Scream (5)
    Pavement (4)
    Prince Fatty (4)
    Public Enemy (4)

  26. not sure what the link was to – but I’m now obsessed with the artworks: Sigmar Polke’s – Jugendstil and Gerhard Richter – Cage (2) from the Italian Pavilion. Cheers for that.
great list by the way and good to see more Pepe DeLuxe.

  27. Mmmm. That’s lovely.

btw. Hope you (and RTJ!) are going to put in an appearance on RR for Fuel’s guruship next week. It needs more female input on there, even if it’s just for one week. Got to make it a good one x

    • eh, i post mostly misogynist cock rock anyway, not much point in me being a girlie on there. I won’t be there, i’ve already had the Graun delete my profile. But if Fuel gets Lust for a topic, please someone post the Stones’ Bitch for me 🙂

      • Something going mad with the posts not posting where you reply. When I looked in this morning I thought bloody hell! You were really pissed on Saturday, your posts are all over the shop!

My RR juices haven’t really been flowing for a while either (and not because of the female thing) except for odd spurts. Now you’ve put me on a real downer.

      • I’m imposing rules on myself so that I can’t list another Stones song. I’m actually banning myself from listing any artists I’ve previously listed as well as those listed this week by Sakura. The topic won’t be lust but is sadly Rocks Off shoehorn friendly and has plently of lust friendly tunes.

BTW. The Pretenders were nommed. I was hoping to get that but Albert!? beat me to that hole. I clicked recommend. Bit too busy to keep up with the blog this weekend.

    • I’m thrilled to bits you enjoyed my playlist! Puressence are a favourite band of mine from Manchester who’ve been going since the early ’90’s (I’ve just discovered they split last year. That is a damn shame!). They never got the recognition that The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays or Oasis got, which I don’t understand because they are/were better by far. It’s that heavy Northern English industrial sound (which is where you probably get the DM connection) against James Mudriczki’s pure, sweet, strong vocal singing about the bitter pain of loss and heartache. Here’s a favourite of mine that showcases it: Don’t Know Any Better. They were very big in Greece, and here you can see them perform the song live on Greek tv. The patter between James and the Greek link man at the beginning cracks me up! Typical Manc humour!

I really don’t know the answer to why there are so few women on RR. It is strange. Since I started posting the core of female posters seem to either have left or post infrequently. I don’t know if there were more before. I miss SpottedRichard!

Yes I read about the use of prosthetics in Nymphomania. I would like to see it tho, not because of it’s cutting edge, art-house leanings, but because I’m a P is for perv! 4+ hours takes a lot of stamina tho I must say. Thank you lr. x

      • I imagine that sounded pretty spectacular in a surround-sound cinema. I was only half joking about the pervy bit, having seen the trailers and, read a couple of reviews especially knowing about the body doubles and prosthetics. I know better films to get my jollies off to! Fascinating subject/story tho, anything with the lovely Charlotte in is worth looking at and it all just looks a bit bonkers, so it’s piqued my interest. I will let you know my thoughts when I eventually see it. Thanks.
