elastic bands – this week: O

I Am Kurious Oranj about
The game to illustrate either:
How wildly eclectic your taste is… or,
How perfectly streamlined it is.

I will post a letter of the alphabet
all BANDS or ARTISTS must begin with that letter.
Artists letter is determined by the letter at the beginning of their SURNAME (if they use it) – ignore the use of ‘The’ in a bands name.
up to 13 songs are allowed – fewer if you wish.
All can be the same artist if that represents you perfectly or all the same genre. Just make them great tunes.

make a youtube playlist (if you wish) and link to it – just link to it – don’t overload the thread.

Cut and paste the band names and tracks (in a joyous list style) in the comments.
Then we can chat about the choices – add some waffle if you wish (about how narrow or varied those choices are) … but above all, have fun.

  1. Awesome artwork. Tough one this week.

Organized Konfusion – Releasing Hypnotical Gases
Ohio Players – Who’d She Coo
    Ohio Players – Skin Tight
O’Jays – For the Love of Money
    Outkast – Ms Jackson
    Offspring – Hit That
    OMD – Dreaming
Oasis – Don’t Look Back in Anger
Oasis – nah, i can’t hog all the Oasis tunes, can i? i mean, surely i won’t be the only person with an Oasis tune on my list. Right?
Sinead – This IS a Rebel Song

All i got. (No, i didn’t forget Ozzy, i just don’t like his solo stuff much.)

I’m still probably forgetting someone big.

      • Am Kurious Oranj is the eleventh album by The Fall written as the soundtrack for the ballet I Am Curious, Orange, produced by dance group Michael Clark & Company; themed loosely around the 300th anniversary of William of Orange’s accession to the English throne.
The album’s title is derived from Swedish director Vilgot Sjöman’s films I Am Curious (Yellow) (1967) and I Am Curious (Blue) (1968). (Which is the question I guess you are asking) – so no, not as a film; but an album and ballet.

The title appears as I Am Kurious, Oranj on some parts of the packaging formats.

      • Ah. Yep, the films were what i meant (know about them but actually haven’t seen them.) I’m somewhat clueless about The Fall – know of them but i don’t believe they ever made it over here in any capacity. I’m pretty clueless about a lot of bands others listed here too that everyone else seems to know – The Orb, Orange Juice, Orbital, The Only Ones – i do know of Opeth but couldn’t name anything.

      • it’s kicking up some particularly british bands the O’s:
The Orb and Orbital – came in during the rave era – there was a ‘chill out’ side to to it – that the orb perfected on ‘Little fluffy clouds‘.

Orbital did a closing set at Glastonbury one year (1994) and sealed the deal of making a dance duo work live at a festie rather than at a club… and the next year the festival created a dance tent because of it – I was there; IT WAS GOOD.

Orange Juice was a Scottish post-punk band – The band released their first singles during 1981 on the independent Postcard Records label founded by Alan Horne, along with fellow Scottish bands Josef K and Aztec Camera. Postcard records had a fairly distinct sound of ‘sophisticated pop’ in comparison to the punk that had been around.

Edwyn Collins the singer had a hit a decade later with a 1994 single, “A Girl Like You” featured in the films: Empire Records, The Secretary and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. “The Magic Piper (of Love)“, a 1997 single featured on the soundtrack of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.

There’s a love/hate to The Only Ones – Another Girl, Another Planet was such a big indie hit for the band nothing else came close – friends of mine detest it – not because it’s bad – but because our alternative drinking holes always had the fecking song playing as we walked in. A case of too much of a good thing (didn’t put us off booze though – so this theory might have a flaw)… I still love it – the song etc.

  2. I think this is a tricky list – not that many O’s I like, and there are a few I have to avoid

Right, the first four were pretty easy, and I have to admit liking the Offspring track a lot (even if I don’t like much else by them) and Opeth were a shoo in. Then we head off to soul and R ‘n’ B for a bit, before getting a bit country and southern (YEEE HA!), a bit of Cait and ending up with the hippies.

    Phew, made it!

And I managed to avoid the Gallagher brothers.

The Only Ones – Another Girl, Another Planet
The Orb – Little Fluffy Clouds
    Orbital – One perfect Sunrise
    Opeth – The Devil’s Orchard
The Offspring – Pretty Fly For a White Guy
    Odyssey Native New Yorker
    O’Jays – Money
    Alexander O’Neal – Criticize
    Ohio Players – Pain
    Roy Orbison – Crying
Ozark Mountain Daredevils ~ If You Wanna Get To Heaven
    Cait O’Riordan – I’m a Man You Don’t Meet Every Day
    Ozric Tentacles – There’s A Planet Here

    • And I have to admit leaving Orange Juice out, mainly because i think they’ll get a lot of noms elsewhere.

      • oh, I do like your list Carole! I’m afraid I’ve duplicated it a bit (I posted before I read) but they are good bands, so why not? 🙂

    • The woman speaking on Little Fluffy Clouds is Rickie Lee Jones. Maybe everybody already knew that – I only found out recently.

  3. Might as well start my playlist exactly the same way as Carole’s:

The Only Ones – Another Girl, Another Planet
The Orb – Little Fluffy Clouds
Orbital – Halcyon On and On
One Dove – White Love (Guitar Paradise Mix)
    Ooberman – Shorley Wall
    Frank Ocean – Pyramids
    Outkast – Hey Ya
Of Montreal – My English Tour Diary
Of Monsters and Men – Little Talks
    Oasis – Live Forever

    Or alternatively:

Okkervil River – The President’s Dead
Okkervil River – Down Down The Deep River
    Okkervil River – Plus Ones
Okkervil River – Wake And Be Fine
Okkervil River – Listening To Otis Redding At Home Over Christmas
Okkervil River – A Girl In Port
    Okkervil River – Singer Songwriter
Okkervil River – A King And A Queen
    Okkervil River – Westfall
Okkervil River – The War Criminal Rises And Speaks
Okkervil River – Calling And Not Calling My Ex
Okkervil River – John Allyn Smith Sails

  4. O ! This proved tough, not only very few “O” artists to choose from but the one I was going to flood the playlist with doesn’t have many vids on Youtube and half of those aren’t allowed for some reason. Rats !

Ottowan – D.I.S.C.O. ( So catchy it hurts)
The Other Half – Mr Pharmacist ( you can see why the Fall covered this one !)
Roy Orbison – Blue Bayou ( Lovely voice)
Of Monsters and Men- Dirty Paws ( Iceland’s finest , mysterious)
Ai Otsuka – Chu-lip ( deeply odd video)
Seiko Oomori – Absolutely she ( approximate translation) ( LOVE this girl, fave J artists of the moment, alas Youtube won’t let me link to some of her stuff or I’d post even more for this list).
Yasuko Oomori – Midnight innocent friendship opposite sex ( Same girl as above, not sure why there are 2 different takes on her name, this is her “idol” type presentation, she does her songs in different styles and with different backing bands !)
    Ogre you asshole – Balance ( J-Rock)
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – Enola Gay ( Classic 80s bleepfest)
Tony Orlando and Dawn- Tie a yellow ribbon ( Look, O.K. it’s an earworm of all earworms)
Mike Oldfield – Froggy went a courtin’. ( have had this since about 1974, can’t stand Tubular Bells and all that stuff but this struck a chord for some reason).

The two missing are more Seiko Oomori, they are on Youtube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aT2B-MEAMLA ( which is the RaiRai Band backed version of Midnight Innocent friendship and is more “Beefheartian” in style and

Which is “Movie with you” which is “folky” Seiko

I would also, if I could, substitute Mike Oldfield for

If you cannot use magic. Which is “bonkers” Seiko.

Yes, I love her stuff that much, she would have had the whole list if I had been just doing i-Podding.

  5. Over ‘ere to my playlist

John Otway (& Wild Willy Barrett) – Really Free
    Ougenweide – Ouwe Wie Jaemerliche
Phil Ochs – When I’m Gone
    Oregon – If
    Anita O’Day – Honeysuckle Rose
    Odetta – Hit Or Miss
Beth Orton – She Cries Your Name
Over The Rhine – All My Favorite People
Opa Cupa – Cpt. Due Inutili Parole
    Osibisa – Che Che Kule
Carl Orff – Odi et Amo (from Catulli Carmina)
Oysterband (& June Tabor) – Mississippi Summer

  6. I expect I’ve missed out someone important again, but here is my list
Oh, quite a few bands begin with O
I have more than one track by a couple of artists and it’s turned out a rather proggy/druggy thing, but I love it, in all it’s patchouli and tie dyed glory, hope you like it too

    1. Ozric Tentacles – Domes of G’Bal
    2. The Orb – Little Fluffy Clouds
    3. Opeth – Windowpane
    4. O. Children – Ruins
    5. Opened Paradise – Hopes on Crystal
    6. Oceansize – Music for a Nurse
    7. Orbital – Satan
    8. The Orb – Perpetual Dawn
    9. Ozrics – Eternal Wheel
    10. Opeth – In my Time of Need

      • thanks, have you seen the Ozrics live? I saw them supporting Hawkwind and on their own in little remote pubs across Cornwall I can say it’s an experience not to be missed, I danced until I had blisters.

So many great Opeth songs to choose from, I gather you’re a fan of Heritage’s prog leanings then? Apparently the new album (hopefully June this year) will continue in the same direction.

      • Ozrics – Hawkwind double header was always an interesting night out…

…. he says leaving any interesting stories hanging in the air – away from the internet – like a mushroom cloud of ancient anecdotes.

  7. I’m having trouble finding as many as 13 “must haves”, especially ones that haven’t been picked already (not that that matters of course) but here’s my starter list. More to follow plus yootoob list (a nation weeps).

Only Ones – No Peace For The Wicked
Orange Juice – Rip It Up
The Outsiders – New Uniform (or One to Infinity)
Oyster Band and June Tabor – Love Will Tear Us Apart
Odetta – All The Pretty Horses
    O’Jays – Backstabbers
Orioles – It’s Too Soon To Know
Opus III – It’s A Fine Day (this is the first version I heard)
    Roy Orbison – Running Scared
    Sinead O’Connor – Three Babies
Oldham Tinkers – Come Whoam To Thi Childer An’ Me

I do love to hear The Orb and Orbital but I couldn’t pick any individual tracks.

    • yeah, it was the “must haves” that was the problem for me. I could have easily left of OMD, for one, with that criteria.

    • I forgot Odetta! And I remembered her a while back whilst thinking about songs for a possible O list. I didn’t check anyone’s list before posting – chose the same O’Jays song.

    • Here’s the link to the list. I decided on One To Infinity for my Outsiders track. And I made a typo above. The Odetta title should, of course, be All The Pretty Little Horses. I would not advise listening to this playlist if you’re feeling at all fragile. It’s melancholy to the point of morbidity. Wasn’t intended, just turned out that way after I decided to begin with my second favourite Only Ones song just to be different.

The three tracks I’d fight to keep are Sinead, The Orioles and the Oldham Tinkers should anyone be interested.

  8. Beth – no, never got around to seeing the Ozrics live, mainly because my ex hated them and I’ve not seen any tours announced in the last decade.

As for Opeth, yes, I love their proggy side best. I like the black metal stuff, but the prog stuff is awesome. If they continue to work that seam, I will be a happy woman.

  9. Tough one !

    The O’Jays – I Love Music
Odyssey – Going Back to my Roots
Alexander O’Neal – If You Were Here Tonight
    Robert Owens – Visions
Omar – There’s Nothing Like This
Oneness of Juju – Everyway But Loose
    Billy Ocean – Love Zone
The Only Ones – Lovers of Today
Orange Juice – Rip It Up
Roy Orbison – Only The Lonely
The Outcasts – Just Another Teenage Rebel
    John Otway – Really Free
The Ordinary Boys – One Step Forward

  10. Carl Orff – O Fortuna
    Roy Orbison – In Dreams
    The O’Jays – The Backstabbers
    Oysterband – Everywhere I Go
Beth Orton – She Cries Your Name
    Osibisa – Fire
    Oasis – Wonderwall
    Outkast – Hey Ya
Oysterband – Put Out The Lights
    Mike Oldfield – Hergest Ridge

A shorter list than usual – even so, Oysterband appear twice, with 2 different favourite songs. O Fortuna is followed on the video by another song which isn’t part of the playlist but you may want to listen anyway. Hergest Ridge was chosen because I thought everyone would go for Tubular Bells….!

  11. Otway Cheyrl’s going home
Oldfield. Incantations with maddy prior off Exposed
stuck after that .. ocean colour osbisa only ones couldn’t name one
    Roy’s only the lonely

  12. Well, for what it’s worth, here are mine. Not much that hasn’t already featured, artist-wise.

    The Originals: Suspicion
Billy Ocean: Red Light Spells Danger
    The Other Two: Tasty Fish
    OMD: Tesla Girls
    Ooberman: Blossoms Falling
    Oh My!: Kicking and Screaming
    Orange Juice: Rip It Up
Ocean Colour Scene: The Day We Caught The Train
    Roy Orbison: Running Scared
    Beth Orton: Concrete Sky
Odyssey: If You’re Looking For A Way Out
    One Dove: White Love
    Sinead O’Connor: My Special Child

    bish’s elastic O bands

  13. Oh dear, late to the party and my meagre offering of Ohs have mostly been taken.

Trying to remain original I’ll avoid OuKast, though I do love that song Hey Ya, OMD and Enola Gay, amylee took my preferred Offspring number and barbryn took most of my Okkervil River nominations.

Suzi’s taken Orff; so what does that leave me:

    The Offspring – Self Esteem
Roy Orbison – I Drove All Night
Okkervil River – Our Life Is Not A Movie Or Maybe
Opus – purely for chinny – Live is Life
I will choose an Ozzy number – Mr. Crowley.

  14. okay paddy – furrier
    olivia tremor control – hideaway
    oslo – weapons down
    oasis – cigarettes & alcohol
    OMD – joan of arc
only ones – another girl another planet
    oi polloi – nuclear waste
    OFF – wiped out
    the oscillation – fall
    orbital – are we here?
Fire with Jim O’rourke – please, i am released

seems to be my most eclectic to date. i don’t have the jim o’rourke track but was fascinated by it a couple of years back and listened to it a lot on you tube. i’ve always liked that oasis track, I mean who doesn’t like Get it on?

    van O’s

  15. Well at least it’s not linking to a random Spill post from 5 years ago for no apparent reason

Very streamlined this week, and on the macho side, although there’s a bit of light relief with Oizone and a sensitive take on anarcho punk from Omega Tribe

    Oxymoron – Crisis Identity
    The Oppressed – White Flag
One Way System – Ain’t No Answers
Old Firm Casuals – Gang Like Us
    Oizone – Wannabe
    Oxymoron – Skunk
    The Outcasts – Winter
    Omega Tribe – My Tears
Oi Polloi – Let The Boots Do The Talking
    Overspill – Death By Viagra
Oi Scouts – Boots For The Beatdown
    Oxymoron – You’re A Bore

  16. this one was hard – * tracks are from bands I like more than a few tracks of, others are one off singles, plus tracks from people I only have few of so can’t tell if the standard holds up:

    Elastic bands O

    Basement Band Song The Organ*
Don’t Wait For Tom Over The Rhine*
    Bluebird One Self*
    Ghetto Goth Orties
the three Ohi Ho Bang Bang
    Galaxy Of Emptiness Beth Orton*
    Yuri Oi-Va-Voi
Flawless (Phunk Investigation Vocal Mix) The Ones
    Shorley Wall Ooberman*
Heaven Is A Halfpipe (Album Version) OPM
    Little Fluffy Clouds The Orb*
Hair Dude, You’re Stepping On My Mystique Out Hud*
    Sandwich Day Owl & Mouse

alternately this could be the 13:

    A Sudden Death The Organ
No One Has Ever Looked So Dead The Organ
    Love, Love, Love The Organ
    Sinking Hearts The Organ
    Memorize The City The Organ
We’ve Got To Meet The Organ
It’s Time To Go The Organ
Even in the Night The Organ
Oh What a Feeling The Organ
Let the Bells Ring The Organ
Fire in the Ocean The Organ
Can You Tell Me One Thing The Organ
    Don’t Be Angry The Organ

  17. I’ve got my thirteen in a playlist, but not in the right order. How the F… do I alter the order? Been fighting with it for ten minutes trying to figure out how I move songs up/down to put ’em in a playworthy order.

    • I was moving my playlist up and down last night too (there’s a cross with arrows that comes up when you hoover over just to the left of the order number – for those that don’t know) – but they kept on jumping right back to the order I first used – then I ‘played all’ and they had gone to how I wanted them – confused as ever.

    • If i can remember – it’s not easy to find. But in your account – look for “edit playlist” (or something similar). You should see all the videos in the current order in a list down the page. You check the songs and can click “remove”, “move to top” or “move to the end”. It takes some doing, it’s not easy like drag n drop. Then click “save”.

  18. Sod it, it’s bedtime.

The DsD Oh, really? Oh yes, really! playlist is here, in a completely random order. Not for love nor money can I get any page tools to work on YT tonight.

    Oasis – Champagne Supernova
The Osmonds – Crazy Horses *
    Otway & Barrett – Headbutts
OK Go – Get Over It
The Ordinary Boys – Seaside *
The Orange Lights – Life Is Still Beautiful *
    One EskimO – Kandi
Over The Rhine – Latter Days
Shuggie Otis – Me And My Woman
    Oui3 – For What It’s Worth *
    Overseer – Heligoland
    ‘O’Rang – Little Brother
Sinead O’Connor – Feel So Different

What? No Ozzy Osbourne? Nah, none of my favourites seemed to fit this list.

    * against a song means the one and only choice from those artists for me.

For OTR & Sinead in particular, I could give you 13 song playlists for each and still leave off favourites.

  19. I have a big smile at all of the Oasis songs – donds all around. Fine picks and i’d also add Up in the Sky, Hindu Times, Stop the Clocks, Supersonic…think i could have done an all Ohio Players / Oasis / Offspring list (donds for all Offspring – fine picks there too.), but you’d have to pry Organized Konfusion and Sinead from my cold dead hands too.

Also a dond for Carole’s Native New Yorker – certainly knew the song but no clue who did it – more proof that not all disco sucked.

Only Ozzy tune i might have considered was Children of the Grave, but not a patch on Sabbath.

  20. OK Go – Here It Goes Again
Our Broken Garden – Garden Grow
    Oh-Ok – Such N Such
    OMC – How Bizarre
The Outsiders – Time Won’t Let Me
    the olympics … the bounce
Olympic Runners – Put The Music Where Your Mouth Is
Toktok vs Soffy O. – Day Of Mine
origin unknown valley of the shadows
    Orchestra Baobab – Mouhamadou
    Other Lives – For 12
Orkidea – Unity (Original Mix) HD
Oranssi Pazuzu – Dub Kuolleen Porton Muistolle

  21. OMC – Origin Unknown – Orchestra Baobab
    were all in my longlist

Toktok vs Soffy O would have made my list if I’d thought about putting it in the O’s.

some new ones to me there – will have a listen later – while looking forward to the words write up.

  22. Cheers, I went O for Obscure. Your list is lots of new-to-me stuff as well. My list is left-field pop songs then some longer stuff. Opal should be in that list with Soul Giver. (Added it) I wonder what happened to David Roback, he was ace in the Rain Parade too… Kendra Smith obviously had a distinguished solo career after that…

Oranssi Pazuzu have a sort of dub reggae crossed with black metal thing going on there. They’re sort of the darkside of mixed-up experimental metal genres compared to say Diablo Swing Orchestra. Olymppic Runners are one of the earliest Brit Funk bands. Due a revival.

Donds for Orange Juice – Felicity; The Orb – toxygene; Orbital – Belfast; Shuggie Otis – Strawberry letter 23; OMD – Red Frame, White Light; Oasis – Live Forever; Ohio Players; O’Jays; One Dove; Only Ones; Okkervil River; Outkast; Odyssey; Frank Ocean; Of Monsters and Men; Opeth… and the list goes on.

  23. Have had a few ‘d’oh’ moments as I went through the lists….I didn’t look at anyone else’s list before posting mine so a couple of duplications.

  24. OK, I’ve only got 8, and most of those I owe to earwormers:

Beth Orton – Blood Red River: I do like this though the lyrics are daft
Mike Oldfield – In Dulci Jubilo: Never fails to cheer me up
Orange Lights – Life is Still Beautiful: Courtesy of DsD
Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Mocambique – Nwahulwana: Courtesy of goneforeign
Over the Rhine – All Over Ohio – Courtesy of tincanman
Ozark Mountain Daredevils – Probably Always Will: I love the whole album (It’ll Shine When It Shines) – played it to death over the years and still go back to it
Ozone – Dragostea Din Tei: Used to be one of Sam’s favourites when he was small, especially when they used it for the Lego rock monsters video
The Other Europeans – Goldene Khasene / Hora de la Cahul – Courtesy of ghe

    • D’oh! Donds for Nwahulwana.
I missed that because I have their name anglicised as Marrabenta Orchestra.
And yes, many thanks to goneforeign for the introduction to them.

  25. Ono it’s the O’s:

    Orbital (10)
    OMD (8)
    Opal (4)
    John Ottway (4)
    Orb (3)
    Beth Orton (3)
    Oasis (2)
    Okkervil River (2)
    Only Ones (2)
    Our Broken Garden (2)
    Agnes Obel (1)
    Odawas (1)
    Of Monsters & Men (1)
    Ooberman (1)
    OPM (1)
    Opus III (1)
    Roy Orbison (1)
    William Orbit (1)
    Ordinaryson (1)
    Orties (1)
    Over The Rhine (1)

(Orange Juice get filed with Edwyn).

  26. Another flying visit for me this week – sorry Shane! The first few off the top of my head:

    Oxes (noisy weird rock)
Ove Naxx (Osaka -based breakbeat dude)
    Operation Ivy (classic US punks)
Oasis (would go for Slide Away)
    Orcustus (Norwegian black metal)
    Ovo (more noise)
    Om (droney stuff)
Onani Machines (cheeky J-punk – don’t think you need to speak Japanese to work out the meaning of this one!)
