elastic bands – this week: S

It’sssss easier this week – gonna be a biggie, sssssso it’ssss up early again
The game to illustrate either:
How wildly eclectic your taste is… or,
How perfectly sssssstreamlined it isssss.

I will post a letter of the alphabet
all BANDS or ARTISTS must begin with that letter.
Artists letter is determined by the letter at the beginning of their SURNAME (if they use it) – ignore the use of ‘The’ in a bands name.
up to 13 songs are allowed – fewer if you wish.
All can be the same artist if that represents you perfectly or all the same genre. Just make them great tunes.

make a youtube playlist (if you wish) and link to it – just link to it – don’t overload the thread.

Cut and paste the band names and tracks (in a joyous list style) in the comments.
Then we can chat about the choices – add some waffle if you wish (about how narrow or varied those choices are) … but above all, have fun.

  1. Oh no! How am I going to ssssssolve this if I have 13 from The Bossssss there won’t be room for Scissor Sisters, Slipknot, Stone Sour, Soundgarden, Savage Garden, Styx, Paul Simon, Supertramp, The Stranglers, Spin Doctors, Snow Patrol (could have 13 from Gary and the boys too), Bob Seger, Scott Stapp, Seal, Carly Simon, Simple Minds, Slash, SoAD, Taylor Swift or The Specials.

Thissss issssss a ssssssssseriousssss problem 😦

  2. I’ll cover Soundgarden for you. Spin Doctors is a good shout; I’d’ve forgotten them if you hadn’t mentioned ’em.

  3. OK after just looking at the vinyl:

Donna Summer – I Feel Love
Siouxsie and the Banshees – Helter Skelter
    Slits – Typical Girls
    Sugarcubes – Birthday
    Specials – Ghost Town
Dusty Springfield – The Look of Love
    Status Quo – Down Down
Smiths – How Soon Is Now
Sly & the Family Stone – Everyday People
Sparks – Talent Is An Asset
    Patti Smith – Gloria
Sex Pistols – I Wanna Be Me
The Seekers – The Carnival Is Over

Hon mench’s for The Sound, Suicide, Sly and Robbie, Skunk Anansie, Soul To Soul and I think I should stop there………….

p.s. Debelle is a sort of surname I think.

  4. been dreading this week.

    Soundgarden – Birth Ritual
Smashing Pumpkins – eenie, meenie – My Daydream today. or Cherub Rock or fuck it, the whole catalog.
    Slint – Nosferatu (thanks, Fuel)
Sic Alps – First White Man to Touch California Soil
    Ty Segall – My Sunshine
    Strokes – 12:51
Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma
    Steppenwolf – Corina Corina
Soft Boys – I Wanna Destroy You
Sigur Ros – Ba Ba Ti Ki Do Do
Cat Stevens – Oh Very Young
Soulsavers – Revival (hope that helped you, DsD)
Gil Scott-Heron – The Revolution WIll Not Be Televised

    • Ba Ba Ti Ki Do Do? Really? Wow. Wouldn’t have made my Sigur Ros Top Twenty.

And re Revival: naturellodonds, but not in the three Soulsavers tunes I’m choosing between.

      • Love nearly was my Soulsavers choice, but i went for Lanegan. It wasn’t the song, but the group i was trying to cover you on – indivual songs are splitting hairs on a letter this wide. I’m hoping Carole and some others cover me for alt choices on some artists. I don’t like the vocals so much on Sigur Ros tunes.

      • Love would have been an equally good choice. I’ve got the same Soulsavers dilemma, and am leaning towards a Lanegan choice too. Not set in stone yet though. But that’s for tomorrow evening. Got a 5am alarm call coming, so it’s bedtime now.

    • here’s a list – as i no longer have a Graun account, it may come out as a video list here instead of a link – hopefully a blog elf will fix it.

Seems youtube changed their ordering edit a bit – so here’s some new instructions. In your account, find the “video manager” link from the dropdown at the top and click. On the sidebar to the left, click “playlists”. Then click on your playlist (should be at the top). Now you should see the videos in the list in order from top to bottom. To change the order – for each video, mouse over the time to the far right. You’ll get a dropdown that says “more”, you can click “move to top”, or “move to bottom”. Cumbersome as hell, but it can be done.

      • I just headslapped myself bigtime – i added Small Faces – Afterglow of your Love and Rod Stewart – Every Picture Tells a Story to my list. Sorry, they just can’t be left off.

    • Just seen your post, Amy. I may have picked up one or two you omitted, but I’ve also done the same bands as you as well.

    • Big donds for Cat Stevens. This would’ve been on my list if I’d had room, but I figured that you’d already mentioned it – usually I don’t check what everybody’s listed first but it was so late yesterday when I was able to at last concoct a list and there were so many S’s to choose from that this time I did. I changed my Stranglers nom from Hanging Around which had been mentioned to No More Heroes but that was the only other alteration.

      • Someone already did Down in the Sewer, that or probably Nice and Sleazy would have been my pick. I think probably we all ould / should have done an A and a B list like Carole. I underthink my lists 🙂

  5. Here is a public service announcement: the following artists will NOT figure in the First Thoughts DsD Baker’s Dozen Esses –

  6. I will try to put together a playlist tomorrow of one song from the following artists:

    Somebodys Brother,
    Sigur Ros,
    Spear Of Destiny,
    The Sundays,
    Status Quo,
    The Smithereens,
    Scritti Politti

    And you wouldn’t believe how many artists I scrolled down and thought ” … nope … not worthy … mmm-maybe … “.

Oh and when I get my hands on Tinny, there’s going to be trouble. How did I end up with over a dozen different Scooter songs represented a total of 58 times in my iTunes?!?!?

  7. Shrimp Boat, Silver Jews, Soft Machine, Sparklehorse, Merle Saunders, Seafood, Sebadoh, Stravinsky, Shostakovich. And sundry sentimentally-selected songs secreted in S-lists sited superiorly*.

(*that is actually a word meaning higher in place or position, I was amazed to discover! Isn’t language wonderful? 🙂 )

  8. I usually don’t participate in this but I always do a quick scan of my iTunes list, Here’s this week’s possibilities:
    Sonny Stitt
    Slim Smith
    Smiiey Culture
    Son Seals
    Super Rail Band
    Sly &Family Stone
    Sinead O’Connor [C?]
    Simon & Garfunkle [G?]
    Scoty & Lorna [L?]
    Satch & Josh [J?]
If anyone needs ’em, you’re welcome.

  9. This was tough, because there were too many artists and bands I had to leave out.

So, apologies to Siouxsie, The Smiths, The Staples Singers, David Sylvian, Paul Simon, The Sex Pistols, Slint, Santana, Suede, The Strokes, Soft Machine, Patti Smith and Sigur Ros, who are now officially my S List (B List), if that makes sense.

Anyway, this is a fairly rock-orientated list this week, with very few surprises overall.

  12. This week we have proper stick-yer-finger-in-yer-ear folksinging, bandoneon from the Argentine, a German counter-tenor singing Dowland and Swedish jazz. I ended up removing both Pete and Peggy Seeger, but included Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions Band because I love their energy (I am partial to a brass section kickin’ ass). Many thanks to Blimpy for introducing us all to the delights of Ms. Sermanni. Sorry for the weird order of play, today I just do not have the energy to muck about with youtube – and who knows, maybe it’ll make it all the more interesting…

    Some sort of playlist here

  19. Hello everyone – great lists – I would be playing: BUT…..

BUT my virgin.net mail account has been subjected to the speediest virus I’ve ever come across – anyone who knows me and uses that mail address – don’t open ANYTHING sent to you from it – burn it in hell a.s.a.p.

If anyone has any suggestions about getting rid of it – please help.

    • OK, thanks for the heads-up.
Meanwhile, my internet has slowed down to 56K modem speeds . . . . nothing to do with my having given BT their marching orders you understand, oh lord no!

      • it’s not actually a virus – some idiot at Virgin mail clicked ‘reply all’ to everyone who has ever had an account – the perpetual circle of people ranting at it by clicking ‘reply all’ too – has set the world record of e-mail round robin crap in my inbox.

and the people trying to sell you shit – because they realise this – adding to the cock up is unbelievable.

…..the modern world is a joy.

  20. @ Alfie and Amy – I do have a soft spot for some of The Police’s songs, but Sting solo has only ever knocked me out twice. One was his rerecording of Every Breath You Take for Spitting Image; the other was the version of They Dance Alone he played at the Wembley concert for Mandela’s birthday in 1988. His band that day were the absolute dog’s bollocks. Branford Marsalis, ffs!

    • anything ‘mainstream; in the eighties was way too pop for me, but i have a soft spot for the police as i saw them pre-fame as Cherry Vanilla or possibly Jayne County;s backing back when they were allowed a spot to do some of their own stuff .. roxanne was one .. which was then played constantly on a juke box at a club we went – and somwehow never got tired off it
Sure he’s an okay bloke .. supports very good causes and his Live Aid spot was good too

    • I love the Police, but i like only 3 Sting songs – Fields of Gold, When We Dance, and Fortress Around Your Heart. Blessedly Bono hasn’t gone solo yet….

      • Thanks off the Slipknot dond, could have just as easily put Duality in the list. So many good S groups / singers so few spaces.

  21. Seriously smoking sounds
    and it goes like this
    1. Sisters of Mercy – Afterhours
    2. Siouxsie and the Banshees – Nightshift
    3. Soft Cell – Say Hello, Wave Goodbye
    4. Skeletal Family – Trees
    5. Strangelove – It’s So Easy
    6. Strawberry Switchblade – SInce Yesterday
    7. S.C.U.M – Whitechapel
    8. Suede – By the Sea
    9. Storm Corrosion – Drag Ropes
    10. Steeleye Span – Rosebud in JUne
    11. Soundgarden – Loud love
    12. Sneaker Pimps – Mercy
    13. Secret Machines – Alone, Jealous and Stoned

A preponderance of 80s, but I can’t help it, I love bands that begin with S

    • Great minds! The same opening three artists as my list. Afterhours and Nightshift were both considered before I chose tracks that I think I’ve nomiated / posted less often. I was never going to post Say Hello though, alas

      • Yeah, those are classic bands! I have personal history with Say Hello…I was that girl in a cocktail dress (not really but an ex used to sing the song a lot and it has a place in my heart). Do you like any Soft Cell?

      • Thank you, I do really like the Storm Corrosion album, hope the collaborate further. I got Steven Wilson’s ‘The Raven That Refused to Sing” this week, but I fear it’s a bit too prog and not enough metal for me, sad coz I wanted to love it.

      • There was Trees and Flowers too. You’re right, they were a bit of a one hit wonder, but I may have borrowed their ribbons look when a goth so I couldn’t leave them out.

    • The hardest choices so far

Sisters Of Mercy – Marian : Eldritch has woman trouble as usual

Soft Cell – Heat : dramatic!

Siouxsie & The Banshees: Monitor: prescient!

Sad Society – Suicide Party: veering off the mainstream. One of my favourite ever bands, since 82 they’ve hardly played outside Edinburgh. Underachievers.

Schwartzeneggar – Slice Of Life: moody, tense stuff from Steve Ignorant. Better than Crass imho (that’s me kicked out of the punk scene)

Splodgenessabounds – My Sock’s Gone Down My Shoe: there’s more to Max than 2 Pints Of Lager. Not much more, but a bit more

Skint – In The Firing Line : “like an Irish verison of X Ray Spex” according to a mate of mine. He was talking crap, but they do have saxophone on this track.

Short N Curlies – Marge: anti fascist Oi (and anti Tory / anti Labour judging by this)

Special Duties – Special Duties : “77..78..79…81!” Dumb, but I like it

Samples – Dead Hero: minor punk classic

Screamer – Man Size Rat: great live band bitd, here pondering what they would do if they were the rodent of the title. According to the tabloids this week the giant rats are here!

Sick On The Bus – Punk Police: I have been lectured by the punk police as well! Play this song loudly at them – somewhere between GBH and Motorhead

Striknien DC – one of my favourite ever bands, Ireland’s finest ever exponents of punky reggae mish-mash. They seem to have forgotten the reggae on this track though

  22. Seriously folks, my broadband tonight is stubbornly demonstrating the bandwidth of a gnat’s arse, so I’m not going to make a playlist. FWIW, it would have been (in no particular order) –

    Shack – Cup Of Tea
Somebodys Brother – It’s Not For Long
Soundgarden – Fell On Black Days
    Satchel – Peace And Quiet
Santana – Put Your Lights On
Sigur Ros – Viõrar Vel Til Loftárasa
    Spear Of Destiny – Rainmaker
    Soulsavers – Some Misunderstanding
    The Sundays – Summertime
    Status Quo – Mystery Song
The Smithereens – Top Of The Pops
    Shearwater – Insolence
    and . . .
    Samson – Vice Versa

I’ve dumped Scritti Politti, which would probably have been Oh Patti! I played back both Provision and Cupid & Psyche ’85, and finally realised they haven’t actually aged very well.
So as self-flagellating penance, I’ve picked instead a DsD soft spot, ULTRA-uncool fave from a gig I was at: Bruce Dickinson’s last set with NWOBHM stalwarts* Samson.

    * … with the emphasis on the “wart”!

  23. Well, that’s lots of tracks from my putative S list gone since I last looked (Summertime, Love Is Everything, Say Hello Wave Goodbye…). Which may make narrowing it down to 13 easier. (Of course I could – and may – duplicate but anything to simplify matters!)

  24. Here’s a belated, incomplete list….! Some had to be left out, regretfully…

Show of Hands – Arrogance, Ignorance and Greed
The Stranglers – No More Heroes
Mindy Smith – The Train Song
Andreas Scholl – Down By The Salley Gardens
Percy Sledge – When A Man Loves A Woman
Nina Simone – My Baby Just Cares For Me
The Searchers – When You Walk In The Room
Dusty Springfield – I’m Going Back
Paul Simon – Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War
Steeleye Span – Two Constant Lovers
The Saw Doctors – Hay Wrap
The Sex Pistols – God Save The Queen
Artie Shaw – When They Begin The Beguine

    • Nobody would have wanted to hear my Simple Minds pick (hint – it was from the Breakfast Club). But much as i like it it still wouldn’t have been a list contender for me. I still haven’t really taken to old school SM yet. I just noticed Fuel had one on his list too.

  25. Sss:

    Stranglers (38)
    Mark Stewart (29)
    Smiths (21)
    Shriekback (19)
    Simple Minds (15)
    Siouxsie & The Banshees (9)
    Todd Snider (9)
    Scritti Politti (8)
    Skids (8)
    Adrian Sherwood (7)
    Snow Patrol (7)
    Ty Segall (6)
    Shearwater (6)
    Sonic Youth (6)
    Stump (6)
    Sex Pistols (5)
    Sigur Ros (5)
    Sisters Of Mercy (5)
    Sufjan Stevens (5)

  26. S is just silly – but obviously being the best letter of the alphabet (says saneshane_) .. I just looked on the RR index and I have five bands in there that are one offs – Shaka Ponk/ Shantel/ Spearmint/ SubRosa/ Sugarcubes (yes it was me that got Birthday listed – get in) – all single entries for the bands – not surprisingly with most Sugarcubes and Spearmint are the shock.

So I’m not going to do a best bands list -I’m just having a goth / indie / pop/ illegal rave mash up:

Sorted for Syder and Black S playlist

    Colours The Sisterhood
    Circles The Soft Moon
    Circles Shout Out Louds
    Naked Bodies Sunday Driver
    Fascist Jock Itch Skinny Puppy
Not as Goth as They Say We Are Say Hi
    Attack on Golden Mountain Subrosa
    Hit Sugarcubes
    Shut Up Savages
More Than Jesus (Irresistable Force mix) Slow Bongo Floyd
On a Ragga Tip (Original Mix) SL2
£10 to get in Shut Up And Dance
    Filthy Saint Etienne
    Breach The Peace Spiral Tribe
The Light 3000 Schneider TM Vs. KPT.Michi.Gan

  27. Late to the party as usual, after a somewhat wearing couple of days in darkest Pembrokeshire with family. Immediate thoughts…

    Sisters of Mercy: Ribbons
    Wayne Shorter: JuJu
    Sonny Sharrock: Guitar
    Specials: Ghost Town
Sly and the Family Stone: Dance to the Music
Sex Pistols: Anarchy in the UK
    Tomasz Stanko: Kattorna
Esbjorn Svensson Trio: From Gargarin’s Point of View
    Esperanza Spalding: Radio Song
    Suede: The Drowners
Donna Summer: Love To Love You
    Bruce Springsteen: The River
    Snap!: Exterminate

  28. Today I thought I’d choose a different set of artists and songs for S, but I wondered if choosing albums would narrow down my taste or produce more of the same. Anyway, it produced a few classics and a few oddities, so it’s a bit different. The only qualification was that I listen to the album all the way through and it suits a certain mood. The list is mix of old and new. A future game?
Artists beginning with S: the first 25 artists off the shelf:

    Sonic Youth – Sister

the fun thing here is the last track gets the band name from the second track.

      • That would be brilliant radio programming. Lot of new-to-me and lovely modern stuff and some lesser known classics. Really enjoying Sister vanilla and Sleaford Mods. So many good artists to explore but I’m enjoying limiting myself to a select few at the moment rather than listening to loads of new stuff, unless it’s on Stones Throw.

S is good but I reckon most people could’ve predicted half my lists. I think I prefer the more difficult letters (I did a Q list with wilemena and damn cool it was.)

      • I like the hard one’s too – but it has to be mixed up, I think. There were two tougher ones in a row, so as it’s easter, I thought we could have an easy one.

Q’s going to be fun… some good un’s spring to mind.

      • I didn’t realise I listed to the Jesus and Mary Chains sister quite so much – she’s Sister Vanilla (if anyone didn’t know) – but you can’t really go wrong with the Reid brothers and a female vocalist can you?

Ah Hope Sandoval – I missed Hope – drats and double drats.

      • Kendra Smith who was the in Opal (pre Mazzy Star but I know you know that), would been worth a shout (Shiv would agree) and I’d love to have heard KS with the Reid Brothers. Now I’m thinking of Syndicate of Sound and Shadows of Knight. Things are getting (p)syched!

      • do you know the band Slumber Party?
I’ve got the self titled first album and ‘Psychedelicate’ on record from around 2000/2001 (if anyone has MP3’s I’d be grateful 😉 )
they have that soporific psychedelic paisley underground vibe to them.
I never remember them because the name is a bit odd to look up on youtube – heehee – the name doesn’t really suit the sound (unless you think along the lines of slumber, rather than girly party!)

    • ok, i’ll do a b-list (underthought). I’m leaving off some that were already mentioned.
