elastic bands – this week: #️⃣⁉️* (numbers, symbols and punctuation marks)

Special tough one for those inclined to delve deeper in their collections
The game to illustrate either:
How wildly eclectic your taste is… or,
How perfectly streamlined it is.

I will post a letter of the alphabet
all BANDS or ARTISTS must begin with that letter.
Artists letter is determined by the letter at the beginning of their SURNAME (if they use it) – ignore the use of ‘The’ in a bands name.
up to 13 songs are allowed – fewer if you wish.
All can be the same artist if that represents you perfectly or all the same genre. Just make them great tunes.

make a youtube playlist (if you wish) and link to it – just link to it – don’t overload the thread.

Cut and paste the band names and tracks (in a joyous list style) in the comments.
Then we can chat about the choices – add some waffle if you wish (about how narrow or varied those choices are) … but above all, have fun.

THIS WEEK IS: ?!@^**@£!$132342

    • written numbers are fine – you can never tell how the bands originally wanted it – so add away – I think it’s a narrow selection, so shoehorns are valid this week…. have fun.

  1. Hm, the whole of In My Tribe (bar City of Angels), a smattering of Our Time In Eden and a brace of Blind Man’s Zoos? This is gonna be a tricky week…

  2. First thoughts –

Love Symbol – My Name is Prince
10000 Maniacs – These Are Days
    311 – Down
    Nine Inch Nails – Closer
    Heart – Magic Man

    ok then

    B-52s – Roam
    U2 – Gloria
    UB40 – Red Red Wine
    AC/DC – Back in Black
    T’Pau – Heart and Soul
    Blink 182 – Feeling This
    L7 – Evergreen
    Blink 182 – Feeling This

  3. Challenging, I like it.

Immediate thoughts are 4 Non Blondes, 500 Miles to Memphis (ta DsD), Two Cow Garage (ta tinny), The Three Degrees, The Four Aces, The Four Tops, The Four Seasons, The Five Satins and then it pretty much stops unless I take a leaf out of amylee’s book and use a number anywhere in the bands title: Alabama 3, Maroon 5, Migil 5, East 17, Heaven 17, Unit 4 +2, Level 42, Sham 69, Old 97’s, Blink 182, The Mayfield Four, You Me At Six.

I can’t remember which songs his purpleness released when he was the symbol but there’s bound to be one I like.

    Back later.

  4. Well, with a bit of interpretation of symbols (Pentangle, OK?) and substituting words for actual numbers, I’ve managed 13 tracks. Phew!

    808 State – Pacific State
21st Century Schizoid Band – Starless
    Zero 7 – Somersault
10cc – The Wall Street Shuffle
Fifth Dimension – The Age Of Aquarius
    The B52’s – Planet Claire
    ? and the Mysterians – 96 Tears
Nine Inch Nails – Came Back Haunted
Four Tops – Reach Out (I’ll Be There)
Ten Years After – Stoned Woman
Third Ear Band – Druid One
    Pentangle – High Germany
13th Floor Elevators – Slip Inside This House

  5. To while away the morning hours, staying out of springtime showers here’s my list

Thee 50’s High Teens – サプライズ・サン ( Surprise sun). Japanese garagey pop with Beatlesesque overtones.
Tommy February 6- Runaway. Japanese sophisti-pop, the kind of thing that makes the charts over there.
YBO2- Boys of bedlam. Japanese, not the kind of thing that makes the charts at all. Kind of “gothy” ?
54 Nude Honeys – Drop the gun . Japanese , for a change, garage-ish again.
    800 Cherries – Garasu no Kobin – Shibuya-kei. Twinkly
3rd Line Butterfly – 울음고래 – Korean, laid backish.
13th Floor Elevators – Tried to hide . Great driving beat , man !
1910 Fruitgum Company – When we get married. Fantastic piece of late 60s pop about getting married !
10,000 Maniacs – The Lion’s share . Absolutely my fave song of their’s. No contest.
Lolita No.18 – Punk de go. Japanese punks, to go.
88 Kasyo Junrei – Bukkyou . Japanese ( again !). Post rock, kind of confusing.
9mm Parabellum Bullet – Bone to love you ( I suspect it’s supposed to be “born” but that’s what the vid says !). Fairly standard J-rock, the kind played by many a band at the moment
13th Floor Elevators – I’ve got levitation. Have to have another, one of my all time top albums, flawed but beautiful and with a cover to die for.

  6. Well then………

Four Brothers – Pasi Pano Pane Zviedzo
…….. And the Native Hipsters – There Goes Concorde Again
Seven Hot Air Men – Gotta Feelin’ For You
    808 State – Pacific State
    Four Tops – Bernadette
101ers – Keys To Your Heart

Hmmm… that’s six – back later with a proper playlist.

(I do own own a copy of 4″ Be 2″ – Frustration but I just played it for the first time in years and it’s ‘orrible. I have never knowingly heard anything by 50 Cent)

  7. I’m going to play literally, so all of Amy’s B-52s, U2, UB40, AC/DC, T’Pau, Blink 182 & L7 list are ineligible as far as I’m concerned. My list will include something from Prince’s Love Symbol era, as well as songs from:

    6 String Drag
    5 Goal Thriller
    500 Miles To Memphis
    10,000 Maniacs
    $ign Of 4
    2 Tribes
    .38 Special
    13 Senses

  8. Closest I get is Eleventh Dream Day, but they’re really filed under ‘E’ (as The Four Tops are filed under ‘F’).

  9. 6 by 7 – The Rise and Fall and Decline of Everything (2nd consecutive week for the space rockers from Nottingham!)

10 City – That’s The Way Love Is
    101ers – Letsagetabitarockin
    Chris T-T – Tunguska
PIL – Public Image (bit of a cheat)
    UK Subs – CID

    • hey lovely – I was thinking about you last night ( I was listening to Maddslinky’s ‘Make a Change’ album – whenever I notice something on tru-thought I think of you now) and wondered where you got to.
Hope you are well and have survived the Easter ‘Break’.

      Loveless is a great choice.

      • Nice album to be thought of too. He should have released stuff under the name 50 Shades of Peng. Would have fit well in my list this week.

I’ll have a mooch thru my TT stuff, see what I can drop you.

  15. Lots of foreign and some mild cheating from me this week – playlist !here!

17 Hippies – Frau von ungefähr (dedicated to Maki in case he’s sneaking a peek)
10cc – Une nuit à Paris (I’m expecting them to be on most lists)
AK4711 – Kein schönerer Land (you might know their song ‘Rock’ from the FIFA 06 game)
10,000 Maniacs – Verdi Cries (such a beautiful song, might be cropping up again some time)
The 5 Royales – Don’t Let It Be In Vain (doo wop bee bop)

The 1ders – Dance With Me Tonight (OK, this is a cheat; from the movie ‘That Thing You Do’)

  16. ^&*%! playlist – I am not a number I am a 〒☭☪☪ man

  17. Neat idea @shane. Here’s a few ‘treasures’ and apologies for any duplication. Not sure how playlists work anymore, so songs dropped

13th Floor Elevators – You’re Gonna Miss Me: claim to have coined the term psychedelic rock
6206 Ellen Ave – Angel From Montgomery (Prine cover): Josh Ritter’s college band
    5 Royales – Dedicated To The One I Love: Much-covered, trailblazing 50’s R&B soulsters
[Spunge] – No Woman No Cry (Marley): Got OK from Ziggy Marley to get ziggy with the lyrics

1 Giant Leap – Daphne (w Eddie Reader & Kurt Vonnegut): World-travelling documentary/concept album makers

3 Doors Down – Here without you: Average band tears off huge tearjerker of a song
10cc – Good Morning Judge: Once upon a time songwriters were allowed to have a sense of humour
    2Pac – Ghetto Gospel (w Elton John) – A guilty pleasure

  18. amylee best wishes for the move up to Boston.

Like the idea of creating a symbol to depict ourselves, ooh should have shoehorned in something off of Led Zep IV 😉

  19. Hmmm, horns of a dilemma now …

The CD cover – and thus you have to believe, the band’s intention – says Thirteen Senses, not 13, so I now have to decide if I’m going to include them or not.

    Sod it: NOT.

    Thinking cap on ….

    • ha ha such problems I force you to think about.
Saves reality – or the stress of league title pressure eh? (good of that man U team to take the media pressure away; just when it looked like all the hype might get to the players ;-))

      • Re 13/Thirteen Senses – and I was going to pick Ones And Zeroes too!

Re LFC – “stress”? Oh hell yeah! I’m so out of the habit of LFC leading into the home straight that I really REALLY am getting the shakes whenever I think about Sunday.

And sorry about last weekend, Shane, but y’know …..

      • I was entertained – we nearly got back at you – that’s all I ask in sport; to try.
Our ex manager (that people seamed to think we were pathetic/bonkers to relieve of his duties) – would have tried to shut up shop at two nil down “to try and keep the deficit respectable” we would usually go on to lose by 5 or 6 – making that thought process idiotic.
        It was a fun match.
Now we get a Man U team ready to prove it was their ex managers fault they were shit (feck luck timing; we could have had them before) – then hopefully a Chelsea team not bothered by the league (maybe), and Arsenal who; well, who knows?
Batten down the hatches – there’s a storm brewing – and we are at the epicentre to make a difference, while it all crashes down around us… we might well end up down too – but it’s very entertaining.. and that’s more than I can say about the last 20 months of tedium.
I think there might be some stuff going on at the top of the table – but I haven’t noticed ‘any’ articles about it! good luck.

sorry – got distracted too, where are we? – oh it’s about music here – my mistake.

      • Ta.

Tell you what, I’ll dedicate my 5 Goal Thriller nom to you and NCFC.

Dig through your RR Social CDs, folks, you may find the 5GT song; the band included one of our original number!

  20. 6 String Drag – From Me To Clayton
1 Giant Leap – Braided Hair

    22-20s – King Bee – Woo-Hoo!

Don’t have the bandwidth or time to do a playlist or Drop ’em, so apologies for that.

  21. surprisingly easier than I thought it was going to be (might have shoehorned a couple):

Current 93 – Black Ships in the Sky
Third Bardot – 5 Years Ahead of my Time
    Ten Benson – Rock Cottage
    !!! – Pardon My Freedom
    ¡Forward Russia! – Twelve

    • D’oh! I never thought about ¡Forward Russia!. Mostly a bit too “angular / math-rock” for my liking, but I might’ve picked Eleven, particularly for its Zep-rip-off intro!

      • They were one of the first I thought of, can’t forget that upside down exclamation mark ¡

They had a great run of early singles and then seemed to disappear…or maybe it was me that moved on…

  22. Finally a playlist of ten and a youtube link. Sadly the Seven Hot Air men are not on the toob. Their jazzy inscrumental is on an album called “The Pig’s Big 78s” which was compiled by John Peel’s wife Sheila if you want to know.

    Four Tops – Bernadette
101ers – Keys To Your Heart
    4 Clefs – When I’m Low I get High

Second Layer – Courts or Wars
Three Stooges – Swingin’ the Alphabet
    Third World – Satta Amasagana
…….. And the Native Hipsters – There Goes Concorde Again

list ordered so you can stop before that last track if it drives you mad. Dots and full stops weren’t mentioned in the list of punctuation above but I assume they count. I’ve tried to stick to the remit and only include songs I actually have on vinyl or CD. Succeeded until I couldn’t resist including the Three Stooges.

  23. … this is what my iPod had to offer (of bands not mentioned yet):

    31Knots – Chain Reaction
22 – Young Men and Fire
    ¡¡¡Alarma!!! – Frío

    …or, conversely

Teddy Morgan – 49 Tons (Fred Eaglesmith cover)
Lowell George – 20 Million Things
    Colour Revolt – 8 Years
Souls of Mischief – 93 till Infinity

  24. bit rushed, though i don’t think i’d have come up with too much else. struggled enough with these.

the (international) noise conspiracy – t.i.m.e.b.o.m.b
    3ds – sunken treasure
three johns – death of the european
    1000 violins – like 1000 violins
    10000 maniacs – what’s the matter here
14 iced bears – balloon song
400 blows – we killed like champions
    23 skidoo – kundalini
third eye foundation – crescent, superconstellation

  25. Short countdown:

    23 Skidoo (6)
    !!! (5)
    2 Badcard (3)
    3rd Line Butterfly (2)
    2 Bears (1)
    4″ Be 2″ (1)
    6ths (1)
    808 State (1)

  26. Horribly spammy on here at the moment.. while I’m on tidying up some rubbish I might as well add some artists not yet mentioned…
cheers to shane and vanwolf for the 3d’s and I’ll also second noms for 808 State, 4Hero, 24 Carat Black and 9 lazy 9.

Galaxy 2 Galaxy- Hi tech jazz
Similar concept to Pacific State, a bit more up-tempo. Next to Ian O’brien and Detroit Experiment surprisingly the only successful marriage of techno and jazz.

3rd Generation band- because of money Classic organ driven Ghanaian afro beat.

Area code 615- Stone fox chase The longer version with the odd kalimba break in the middle. Sure everyone knows this.

Michael Wollny’s [em2]- Wasted and wanted. Germany’s shooting jazz piano star, classically trained with punk and rock affiliations.

radio.string.quartet.vienna- Birdland. No youtube but some might recall this as an earworm a while ago. Sublime.cover.version.by.Vienna’s.finest.radio.string.quartet.

RJD2- Explosive. Basically just Quincy Jones’ Moneyrunner, but you’ve got to put it out there first.

Third world love- Nature’s dance. Israeli jazz group led by trumpeter Avishai Cohen. A lilting, lyrical, folk-infused dance theme.

Up, Bustle, & Out- Hip hop barrio. Cuban recorded hip hop instrumental from the socially aware Ninja Tunes outfit.

Us3- Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia).Featuring the sublime Gerard Presencer on trumpet, taking over Freddie Hubbard’s lines from the original Cantaloupe Island. The gateway track that got me into the Blue Note back catalogue.

  27. 23:23’s “Redheads” would be in there too but it’s not on yt. https://soundcloud.com/23-23music/redheads. It’s the bedroom project from Delay Trees’ Rami Vierula and very intimate it is too. I included Jukka Ässä as well, although that’s a bit of cheat but a lovely indie pop sound can always be added.

‘Lectric Worker are Italo Disco from ’82. 22 Pistepirkko are garage pop/rock from Finland. ” Guys on Acid is a classic house track from ’88. ‘Til Tuesday are ’80’s classic pop. 28th Day are brilliant late-era paisley underground pop. 3 Na Massa are a sexy and funky Brazilian band/project and my favourite thing here. The rest are bands mentioned. 808, 10cc, 7 Seconds, 4Hero, 5, 6, 7, 8’s, 23 Skidoo, 3rd Line Butterfly.
