elastic bands – this week: A

But I ain’t got me peace of mind – and if you ain’t got that, you ain’t got nothing
The game to illustrate either:
How wildly eclectic your taste is… or,
How perfectly streamlined it is.

I will post a letter of the alphabet
all BANDS or ARTISTS must begin with that letter.
Artists letter is determined by the letter at the beginning of their SURNAME (if they use it) – ignore the use of ‘The’ in a bands name.
up to 13 songs are allowed – fewer if you wish.
All can be the same artist if that represents you perfectly or all the same genre. Just make them great tunes.

make a youtube playlist (if you wish) and link to it – just link to it – don’t overload the thread.

Cut and paste the band names and tracks (in a joyous list style) in the comments.
Then we can chat about the choices – add some waffle if you wish (about how narrow or varied those choices are) … but above all, have fun.
“I’ve told you before to be careful where you put your legs”

  1. Adverts – Gary Gilmour’s Eyes
Kevin Ayers – After The Show
    Aswad – Three Babylon
Althia & Donna – Uptown Top Ranking
Antony & The Johnsons – You Are My Sister
Winifred At well – Black and White Rag
    Aztec Camera – Oblivious
    Tasmin Archer – Sleeping Satellite
Abba – Slipping Through My Fingers
Joan Armatrading – Love and Affection

May add 3 more tomorrow. Not sure if they will be 3 more by Joan.

    • Thanks for covering my sensitive side, severin. Means I can leave out Aswad, Hegarty, Joan Armourplating and the local girl Tasmin Archer from my list. Donds for all of those.

    • Here’s the link to my playlist which includes the ten I thought of last night plus two more by Joan A (including one already chosen but that’s ok) and the song I somehow forgot by some cartoon folk. That’s what you get for trying too hard to be first. You post in the middle of the night and miss out a record you’ve described as the best pop single ever.

  2. Tweeness to a bit of funk, blues, grunge, metal and hip hop.

    The Association – Cherish
    ABC – Be Near Me
    Air – Cherry Blossom Girl
Archies – Sugar Sugar (go ahead and slap your head, Steve)
    Paula Abdul – Opposites Attract
    Arrested Development – Tennessee
    AWB – Cut the Cake
Animals – We Gotta Get Out of This Place
    Alice in Chains – Rooster
Allman Bros – hmmm. ok, Blue Sky today, even though a blusier one would fit the list better.
Arctic Monkeys – Fake Tales of San Francisco
Aerosmith – Back in the Saddle
Anthrax / PE – Bring the Noise

    Playlist to follow sometime.

    • Oh I will be, mate, I will be! I’ll be sticking to early AB if you want free rein of the last two albums.

      • Spooky #2 – The title track started playing right as I read that comment. But we’ve had that song as a DsD-supplied Earworm before now, so I’m probably going either back one song, or forward three from 1DR on the CD.

  3. Seriously though, ABBA, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Angels & Airwaves, Joan (of course), Adam and the Ants, Arctic Monkeys, Alisha’s Attic, Arcade Fire, Audioslave (Cochise), possibly Anastacia and there’s a group I’m sure I’ve forgotten, help me out DsD oh yes ALTER BRIDGE 🙂

    • i did slap my head last night when i realized i forgot Audioslave. Think i would have gone Show Me How to Live though, but tossup with Cochise.

  4. The Astors – Candy.
    Richard Addinsell – Warsaw Concerto.
    Albinoni – Adagio In G
The Artistics – I’m Gonna Miss You and This Heart Of Mine.
    America – I Need You.
Doris Allen – A Shell Of a Woman.
Marc Almond – Tears Run Rings.
Paul Anka – I Can’t Help Loving You.
Ruby Andrews – Just Loving You.
Average White Band – Pick Up The Pieces.
The Association – Never My Love.
Herb Alpert – This Guy’s In Love With You.

A lot of soul of the Northern and ‘Deep’ variety, a couple of bits of undemanding classical stuff, and a few bits from the box marked romantic. Large elements of me in there.

  5. Arse:

    Annie – Chewing Gum
Au Revoir Simone – Somebody Who
    The Apollas – Mr. Creator
Vicki Anderson – Message from the Soul Sisters
Assata Shakur & Asian Dub Foundation – Reluctant Warrior (Commited to Life)
    Afterlife – This Earth
    Ameeba – Vanhasielu
    Aztec Camera – Spanish Horses
    Aterciopelados – Ataque De Risa
    Acida – Permanente
Margie Alexander – Can I Be Your Main Thing
Abba – The Name Of The Game
ABC – The look of Love
    At-the-Drive-in – One Armed Scissor

    • Loved Vicki Anderson and Margie Alexander in particular, awesome voice.I Wikied her so taken was I, sadly she died last year, but there’s a decent body of her work to explore. Thanks for your link.

      • Cheers. Donds for everything on your list. One of my fave things at the moment is ATR’s mix of CX Kidtronik’s “Let’s Go Krazy”.

BTW. Hope no one thinks these are my actual A-faves. They’re just the first things I see and some recent plays.

  6. And now, it is the A list!

Only one place to start, I think- with RAWK!

This is a pretty rock ‘n’ roll list at the beginning, but it chills out a bit, visits Africa and then goes prog at the end. Änglagård are a Swedish prog group, not sure if they are still around, and ABWH are most of Yes (Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman and Howe) but were prevented from billing themselves as Yes due to contractual wranglings.

We end with the sublime Break by Aphrodite’s Child.

    AC/DC – Highway To Hell
Aerosmith – Love In An Elevator
    Audioslave – Cochise
    Alabama Shakes – Always Alright
Kevin Ayers – Shouting In A Bucket Blues
Allman Brothers Band – Midnight Rider
Atoms For Peace – Before Your Very Eyes
Amadou & Mariam- Senegal Fast Food
    Air- Alone In Kyoto
Änglagård – Ifrån Klarhet till Klarhet
Asia – Here Comes the Feeling
ABWH – Order Of The Universe
    Aphrodite’s Child – Break

  7. Here it is – apols for any duplications

Adam and the Ants – Prince Charming
    Tori Amos- Crucify
Amadou et Mariam – A Chacun Son Probleme
The Allisons – Are You Sure?
    Bernard Allison – Bad Love
    Ash – Girl From Mars
    Athlete – Tourist
The Animals – We Gotta Get Out Of This Place
AC/DC You Shook Me All Night Long
Joan Armatrading – Drop The Pilot
Bryan Adams – Summer of 69
    Alaap – Bhabiye Ni Bhabiye
Apocalyptica – In The Hall Of The Mountain King (Grieg)

    • Multi donds for Adam and the Ants, the Animals, AC/DC, Joan and much to my surprise that you’ve nominated the groover from Vancouver big Canadian donds for Bryan.

    • Donds for A&TA (I’m told they were my first ever gig when I was 5 or 6 years old, but I don’t remember it) and Ash

      • Thanks to people for donds. Am having difficulty posting today, failed earlier. Donds for any Joan Armatrading song.

  8. I discovered the Apocalyptica when searching for a version of that piece some while ago. Think Grieg would have approved. I say, Wow!!! The Allisons came 2nd in Eurovison in 1961. Those were the days.

  9. Hmmm, now who do I like that begins with A?

    * DsD takes a sip of freshly brewed coffee from his Black Ice tour mug, and an evil-looking grin begins to spread across his face *

Oh, we’re gonna rock hard today folks! Back later ….

    • And because we’re going to rock today, that means there’ll be no place in my 13 for:

      Steve Adey,
      Age Of Chance,
      American Music Club,
      Animal Liberation Orchestra,
      Avett Brothers,
      At Swim Two Birds,
      The Adventures,
      Altered Images,
      The Art Of Noise,
      or even
      Ryan Adams.

Just sayin’, so that the rest of you get a memory prod!

      • Donds for Avett Bros…went through a period of listening to them a couple of years ago, then completely forgot about them…

  10. A-list !

    1. Annemarie – Living Model ( indonesian indie ( Indieindie ?), charming)
2.The Angels – (Love me) Now. ( b-side of My Boyfriend’s Back . Original single version has very odd guitar solo and random noises ! Bizarre)
3.The Arrows – I love rock and roll ( as covered by Joan Jett, among others)
4.Gene Autry – Back in the saddle again ( back where a friend is a friend, yip)
5.The Aquarian Age – Good wizard meets naught wizard ( should be played to all children as warning about what drugs can do to your brain)
6.Namie Amuro – New Look ( just the best slice of J-pop ever, possibly)
    7.Asian Kung Fu Generation – Mustang ( J-rock, tuneful)
    8.Antennasia – Mamma mamma ( sophisticated J-electronica)
    9.Anadorei- Deathtrap ( unsophisticated J-noise. Short)
10.The Ambassadors – Surfin’ John Brown ( you spoil us !)
    11.Akiakane – 1945 ( J-rock, one of the few J bands to make the “A” lists !)
    12. Kevin Ayers – Caribbean Moon ( had this as a single BITD, it’s cheesy and horrible “cod” Jamaican accented but I still love it)
    13. Apache Indian – Boom Shack A Lack ( keeping with a tropical feel, Boom shack a lack rude boy).

Can be heard ( by masochists) here – http://tinyurl.com/onw5vvw

AC Acoustics – Hand Passes Empty
    The Auteurs – Idiot Brother
Adam and the Ants – Red Scab / Plastic Surgery
The Adverts – The Great British Mistake

Thought it might be a tough one this week but it was surprisingly easy and spread over 5 decades !

    • dond for the Upstarts and the Animals. Spoiled rotten for Animals choices, that would have definitely been one of them.

    • Between us we’ve covered two of my favourite Aswad tunes. Anyone want to go for “Back To Africa”? And I do love that Adverts’ track too.
Re Adeva – I was visiting my parents when she was in the charts with “I Thank You” and we watched her on TOTP. My mother was most impressed and called her “a real singer”.

  13. Been too busy to play recently, but here’s an A-list:

    Ash – Kung Fu
Art Brut – Formed A Band
    Arctic Monkeys – Fluorescent Adolescent
    Animal Collective – My Girls
The Avalanches – Since I Left You
Animals That Swim – Faded Glamour
The Auteurs – The Upper Classes
Allo Darlin’ – Let’s Go Swimming
    A House – Endless Art
    Athlete – Wires
American Music Club – Johnny Mathis’ Feet
    Arab Strap – New Birds
Tori Amos – Silent All These Years

Alias (“Divine Disappointment”), Alabama 3 (“Don’t Go To Goa”), Air, alt-J, Arcade Fire, Antony and others really ought to be in there too. Spoilt for choice this week.

  14. The Animals’ Rising Sun, Alabama 3’s Soprano’s song, probably an Abba and an Arctic Monkey, but mainly John Adams’ Harmonielehre and Short Ride In A Fast Machine.

  15. Armatrading tall in the saddle – or all 13 choices
Argent god gave rock & roll parts I & II
    Aphrodites Child four horsemen
    A W H B birthight
    Allman brothers stormy monday
Alquin .. wonderful Dutch prog rockers who toured at the same time as Focus
Amazulu for their fine appearance on the Young Ones ( bomb episode ?? )
Kevin Ayers – with young oldfield on bass – joy of a toy ?
Adam Ant stand & deliver .. only joking
Animals house of the rising sun – gone –

    can name nothing by
A Certain Ratio , angelic upstarts , athelitco spizz 80, all saints ( surprisingly good on Jules one time)

    • Alberto y los trios paranoiuos snuff rock the musical
      Amen Corner
(ginger baker’s) Airforce with many drummers & gurvitz’s
Alice Cooper is a band name as the singer is really Vince

methinks Slade began life as a typically heavy Brummy band ‘the Amboy Dukes’
Come on get with it … may be from that period

  16. A fairly electronicy and noisy set this week with a bit of indie thrown in for good measure:

Atari Teenage Riot – Sick to Death
Art Brut – Emily Kane (A-listing! Wooo!)
Albert Ayler – Ghosts, Second Variation

Arctic Monkeys – A Certain Romance

    • woo! Aphex Twin! A friend of a friend went to school with him you know…everyone in Cornwall went to school with him I think!

  17. If I can, I’ll do these as a playlist later, and if I do, there’s no guarantee they’ll be in this order.

Apollo 440 – Stadium Parking Lot.
    Audioslave – Set It Off.
    Alter Bridge – Metalingus.
    Ash – Shark.
Aerosmith – Dude (Looks Like A Lady).

    Andrew WK – Party Hard.
    (Bon) – Riff Raff.

Auf Der Maur – I Need, I Want, I Will.
    Afghan Whigs – Somethin’ Hot.
    Aereogramme – Post-Tour, Pre-Judgement.
Bryan Adams – It’s Only Love.

The three big misses from this list (because I couldn’t find anything RAWK enough at short notice to oust any of the above) are The Alarm, All About Eve and huge DsD faves Alabama 3.

    • Here it is (and yes, re-sequenced) – RAWK with a capital A

I have to say, I’m quite pleased with it, but it is pretty full-on, so its appeal may be fairly limited here. Post-rock fans will note the inclusion of one of the best simple-but-effective videos ever made (Aereogramme), which unfortunately has the rug pulled from under it when the F-word is bleeped out.

      PLAY IT LOUD!!!

      • Yeah, RAWK! Pretty good list that, a couple that weren’t really my cup of tea, never really got on with Andrew WK or Bryan Adams, but hell, yeah, it was like a Friday night at the Hatchet in central Bristol.

    • Bryan Adams! Big surprise DsD. Donds for AC/DC, though not the tracks I expected and Aerosmith but who the hell are Alter Bridge! ! ! 😉

  18. AAAAAAAAAA mix

Bats And Rats And Murderers Architecture In Helsinki
Beat Box (Diversion 1) The Art Of Noise

** I’m fairly sure Andrew Jackson Jihad isn’t his real name so goes in A not J – maybe?

    • Donds for that track from Arctic Monkeys with one of the best opening few lines:

      Well, now then Mardy Bum
      I’ve seen your frown
And it’s like looking down the barrel of a gun

Also got to dond All Saints.

    • I can’t quite decide if I like Austra or not, but that track is cool and the AGE OF CHANCE track too. By the way, the whole of A Spectre is Haunting Europe’s Embers album is a free download on last.fm, thanks for the tip!

  19. alternative tv – action time vision

    big A little a

    • I’ve never met anyone who’s heard of A Spectre is Haunting Europe apart from me before, have a dond, not familiar with that track by them

      • Hi beth. I only have the album flames and that track I think sounds like early interpol. which makes it really good to my ears 🙂

        • I just have one track by them on a compilation, but I like the emptiness of the sound, I must remember to check them out further, I like the track you chose.

      • have a look on last.FM – they used to give away MP3 albums as a creative commons thing – don’t know if they still do… (got photoshop open with some big work on it – so can’t open another window (got football on too so overloading my computer with important things !!!))

        • his Shane, hope you enjoyed your birthday! Yes, I often find odd tracks on last.fm, sometimes they’re not on there for very long, but a great resource, thanks for reminding me.

  20. I don’t have many As, so sorry if I’ve duplicated any:

    Abyssinia Infinite feat Ejigayehu “Gigi” Shibabaw – Aba Alem Lemenea – (thanks to goneforeign);
    Aerosmith – Sweet Emotion – (just because);
    Afro Drum Ensemble / Art Blakey – Ife l’Ayo (There is Happiness in Love) – (thanks to beltway);
    Allman Brothers Band – Jessica – (unfortunate association with Top Gear);
    America – Three Roses – (old favourite);
    American Authors – Best Day of My Life – (surprisingly upbeat for me);
    Archie Bronson Outfit – Cherry Lips – (A for Archie? It’s a band name? Shane got away with it);
Avicii – Hey Brother – (Dan Tyminski!)
    Dave Alvin – Ashgrove – (nicked from tinny, I hope he doesn’t mind. It’s excellent);
    Duane Allman – Please Be With Me – (thanks amylee);
    India.Arie – Brown Skin – (no idea why this hits the spot, but it does);
    Laurie Anderson – O Superman – (classic);
Pete Atkin – Nothing Left To Say – (Clive James lyrics, first heard as a teenager and loved it).

    Here’s the link: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/6hgjpldwgd5o3r9/AAD6v3lzRru8jItQGzH0fIgDa

    • Archie Bronson Outfit do not have anyone called Archie Bronson in their midst – so they live under an A filing system – not B… we are safe Ali – good choice, love that first album.

  21. dond to Ali’s Sweet Emotion, love that song.

My Macbook Pro is in hospital with a possible dead hard drive, so I am relying on memory for my 13 this week, the beginning is easy though

    1. All About Eve – Drowning (sorry, not a very cheerful start)
    2. Marc Almond – Undress Me (love his whole Absinthe album, everso French)
    3. Ash – Walking Barefoot
    4. Anathema – Looking Outside Inside (the album this comes from is ace, the others not so much)

    6. Adam and the Ants – Deutcher Girls (gets stuck in my head the most often)

    9. And Also the Trees – Midnight Garden
    10. Arcana- Like Statues in the Garden of Dreaming
    11. Aphex Twin – Donkey Rhubarb (warning, scary bears in the video)
    12. Aha – The Sun Always Shines On TV
    13. All About Eve – D for Desire (before they found their sound, but I like this one a lot)

    • Breathe by Abney Park (who I don’t remember ever having heard of) is somehow on my Walkman. I now assume I have you to thank for that, Beth. Ta.

  22. A to well, A

Obviously got to start with ABBA and for me it has to be Fernando.

A complete contrast and my offering from those Aussie rockers is a Whole Lotta Rosie.

From one of the best albums ever it’s Arctic Monkey’s and When The Sun Goes Down.

When Tom deLonge left Blink he formed Angels & Airwaves, here’s
    The Gift.

Pleased to see that the groover from Vancouver hasn’t been overlooked and Somebody has already suggested a few tunes 😉

Doing these lists is so Intense so here’s Alicia’s Attic.

Who can forget that opening from Adam and the Ants and Antmusic.

One of the most beautiful songs despite that fateful Top of the Pops episode it’s All About Eve and Martha’s Harbour.

No Cars Go in a harbour and Arcade Fire know of a place too.

Almost time to go Home but still time for the brilliant Gabrielle Aplin.

Time for some rock so it’s Aerosmith and Living on the Edge, which marginally knocked out Janie’s Got A Gun.

Often overlooked Anastacia and Cowboys and Kisses.

Closing off with Magnolia from Alberta Cross.

Oh dear I’ve got thirteen and not listed a single Alter Bridge song, well I couldn’t pick one single song; I’ve listened to their first two albums today and each song that came on I thought that’s the one and then the next one started and I thought no this is the one so in the end I decided I couldn’t pick one tune from them so here’s a selection from all four albums. Turn the volume up and enjoy an A B-List

  23. If I was doing this as a guru I’d probably pick these:

    Arrested Development – Tennessee
Average White Band – Pick Up The Pieces
the aloof – so good (I prefer One Night Stand, though)
Althia & Donna – Uptown Top Ranking
Archie Bronson Outfit – Cherry Lips
    afghan whigs – my curse
AC/DC You Shook Me All Night Long
Arctic Monkeys – A Certain Romance
A Love From Outer Space (Venusian Dub) A.R. Kane
    Animal Collective – My Girls
    Adeva – I Thank You
    Akiakane – 1945
    Air- Alone In Kyoto
Art of Noise – Moments in Love
    Annemarie – Living Model

  24. The A List

Angelic Upstarts – I’m An Upstart

    Anti-Pop Consortium – Born Electric
    Amnesty – Love Fades
All The People – Cramp Your Style
    A-Trak & Tommy Trash – Tuna Melt

    nice ass!

  27. Vicki Anderson, mighty, mighty track, but a week too late. Would have been perfect for last week’s RR topic, and if you didn’t want it, I might have borrowed it! ‘Love Fades’ dond too.

  28. I am A:

    Arcade Fire (10)
    Associates (9)
    Laurie Anderson (9)
    African Head Charge (8)
    A.C. Marias (4)
    Barry Adamson (4)
    AGF (4)
    Lily Allen (4)
    Archie Bronson Outfit (4)
    Art Of Noise (4)
    Audio Active (4)

    • bollocks – when I thought of A – I knew I must NOT forget Barry Adamson.

…and 9 Laurie Anderson, I struggle with her stuff _ really like what I’ve heard. but in small doses. otherwise I start to feel all worthy, intellectual and stuff (and that’s really not me)… I’ve probably been subjected to too much of the spoken word albums and not taken in anything else (except O superman – and that’s ace).

  29. Even later than normal – was away in Edinburgh all last week, and been catching up ever since…

Abba: The Winner Takes It All

    Louis Armstrong: West End Blues
