elastic bands – this week: U and V

elastic-bands-UV

Who cares that it is shining…
The game to illustrate either:
How wildly eclectic your taste is… or,
How perfectly streamlined it is.

Rules.
I will post a letter of the alphabet (or two)
all BANDS or ARTISTS must begin with that letter.
Artists letter is determined by the letter at the beginning of their SURNAME (if they use it) – ignore the use of ‘The’ in a bands name.
up to 13 songs are allowed – fewer if you wish.
Up to 13 of each letter this week if you can think of that many.
All can be the same artist if that represents you perfectly or all the same genre.
Just make them great tunes.

Make a youtube playlist (if you like) and link to it – just link to it – don’t overload the thread.

Cut and paste the band names and tracks (in a joyous list style) in the comments.
Then we can chat about the choices – add some waffle if you want (about how narrow or varied those choices are) … but above all, have fun.

THIS WEEK IS: U and V

  1. NNOOOOO!

    Don’t do it, Shane.
Surely we’ve proved by now that however restrictive a brief, we can fill the pot.

We don’t need two letters. Pull one out again, quick, before anyone notices!

    Off to work. Back later.

    • sorry DsD – got a timescale to kept to… (and the artwork has U and V in it)…
you can use up to 13 bands or artists for each letter still if you wish.

      • What? You mean like this:

        Only UFO Can Rock Me!

        1. UFO – Natural Thing (live).
        2. UFO – Rock Bottom.
        3. UFO – Electric Phase.
        4. UFO – Profession Of Violence.
        5. UFO – Only You Can Rock Me.
        6. UFO – Doing It All For You.
        7. UFO – On With The Action.
        8. UFO – Hard Being Me.
        9. UFO – Mother Mary.
        10. UFO – Running On Empty.
        11. UFO – Pack It Up (And Go).
        12. UFO – Lights Out.
        13. UFO – Love To Love (live).

I’m posting from my phone ’cause I’m knackered and I’ve gone to bed.

A YT playlist of this, and my other Us and Vs will follow tomorrow.

        G’night all.

  2. UV?

This is going to be tough.

Well, we have to start with the Underground of Velvet!

VDGG will be in here somewhere, and also UK and Uriah Heep.

It is definitely going to be Unusual and Varied this week.

The Velvet Underground – Sweet Jane
U-Roy – Chalice In The Palace
    US3 – Cantaloop
    Stevie Ray Vaughan – Lenny
UK – In the Dead of the Night
Van Der Graaf Generator – Killer
    Uriah Heep – Gypsy
Utopia (feat. Todd Rundgren) – Hiroshima
Violent Femmes – Country Death Song
    Underworld – Born Slippy
    Utah Saints – Something Good
    Veruca Salt – Seether
    Ultravox – Quiet Men

    Carole’s_Unusual and Varied playlist

  3. Not VU then? I am enjoying the challenge of this game, thanks for keeping us on our toes. My list seems to veer towards goth/alternative and new this week, I’ll be back with a youtube one soon, got to get the kids to school first. Enjoy

    1. Ulterior – In Vitro
    2. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats- I’ll Cut You Down
    3. Uninvited Guest – Beautiful Orchid
    4. Vaniish- Kaleidoscoped
    5. Visage – Visage
    6. VuvuVultures- Steel Bones
    7. Vetiver – Hurry on Sundown
    8. Ultravox – We came to dance
    9. Velvet Underground – I’ll be your mirror
    10. The Vaynes- Baby Cruel

  4. I might end up with 7 Walker Brothers and 6 Junior Walker songs, inspired, original, thoughts needed! I like this little game.

  5. Well, i’m glad you combined them or i would have been screwed on the U, but might have squeaked the V.

    VU – Sweet Jane
Stevie Ray Vaughan – Texas Flood
    Van Halen – Unchained
    Velvet Revolver – Slither
Virgin Prunes – I Am God
    Vines – Ride
    Voidoids – Time
Vaselines – Son of A Gun (but i vastly prefer the Nirvana cover.)
Vandellas – Dancing in the Street
    Vampire Weekend – Step
    Verve – Lucky Man
U2 – With or Without You
    UB40 – Here I Am

      • and i’ll dond your Vaselines back at you – i could have gone with either. (and unfortunately would take Nirvana’s of both.)

    • Bit of punk (figure the Varukers and UK Subs will show up on at least one list), bit of rock, some Village, and more. And a U2 pick of the day – probably we’re all relieved that i was saved from doing an all U2 list. No Midge Ure, Ultravox, Unthanks, Uriah Heep, Pere Ubu – because i couldn’t name a song by any of them i don’t think. Utopia could probably be shoehorned in though.

  6. Very odd things happening over on Youtube today, no matter what video I try to select it insists that I really mean Katie Perry or a Nutella advert featuring cats !
So no playlist today, folks but I think all these are on Youtbue somewhere.

Vampillia are, probably, more Beth’s kind of thing normally, kind of mettally, kind of Gothy ( and kind of Japanese-y) but this one has the most recent vocal appearance by Jun Togawa , showing the old girl still has it in her.
The Vaccines, an underachieving and not terribly loved band I think. I like a few of their first album tracks and this is as sprightly as any, I first saw them on “Later” and was convinced the bass player was a “fat girl” ( as I said to Ubuette the next day). I was , as so often is the case, wrong.
Violent Arse – Best band name ever. Contest closed. Most ridiculous “Oi” song I have ever heard and, therefore, brilliant.
Undertones – Just a bit of a classic
Velvet Underground. Not the obvious choice, perhaps but it’s a song I really like. When it first emerged ( on a bootleg E.P. in the 1970s) it seemed so “out of character” and yet still so totally them.
Venus and the Razorblades – Kim Fowley at work here. This is here for the tremendous lyric “Let them eat cake….I’ll eat dogfood”. Brill.
    Vaselines – Just swoony
Upsetters – SMASHing little piece of late 60s instrumental Reggae from Scratch and co
Uchoten- Highly interesting 80s Japanese electronic band.
United States of America – What you get if you mix hippies and primitive electronica.Always sound very odd when in company of other tracks from the same era
Tammy- Great guitar riffette on this one and Tammy has one of the greatest Country voices ever
Scott Walker – Big orchestration, weird lyrics just sublime
Sid.- Bless. A great way to finish, I think.

    Vampillia – Lilac
    The Vaccines – Noorgaard
Violent Arse – Oi matters to me
The Undertones – My perfect cousin
Velvet Underground – I’m sticking with you
Venus and the Razorblades – Dog food
The Vaselines – Jesus don’t want me for a sunbeam
The Upsetters – Return of the Django
    Uchoten – Vegetable
United States of America – I won’t leave my wooden wife for you.
Tammy Wynette – Your good girl’s gonna go bad
    Scott Walker – Big Louise
    Sid Vicious – My way.

and as a bonus track, cheese time classic

    Village People – Y.M.C.A.

    • you piqued my interest with Vampillia so I went to find them on Spotify, sadly not the track you mentioned, but I’ve spent a happy half hour in their company so far, thanks for the tip! Megadond for Village People, a great going out song 🙂

  7. Sarah Vaughan – I’ll Be Seeing You
(ask me in ten minutes and I’ll choose a different song by her but this live version is great)
    Upsetters – Retrurn Of Django
    Suzanne Vega – Tom’s Diner
(could be any version with or without music – could be Luka come to think of it)
Violent Femmes – Epp Opp Ork Ah-Ah
(I admit it – this is my favourite track by them)
    Undertones – Teenage Kicks
(predictable but I really couldn’t choose another song over this one)
U-Roy – Chalice In The Palace
    Ultravox – Young Savage
(this “punk” thing was happening at the time)
Voice Of The Beehive – I Think I Love You
(love this song including the D Cassidy version)
Rachel Unthank and the Winterset – Sea Song
(if you don’t like her voice, you’ll hate her covering a Robert Wyatt song. I love it)
    Underworld – Born Slippy
    (see Undertones comment!)
Van Der Graaf Generator – Still Life
Velvet Underground – Venus In Furs
    (I’m in it)
Velvet Underground – I’ll Be Your Mirror
(sublime – for some reason I’ve been singing this for the past week)

    LINKO

  8. Unit 4+2 – Concrete And Clay.
    Frankie Valli – Fallen Angel.
Velvelettes – Stop Beating Around The Bush and Twilight Time.
    Undertones – My Perfect Cousin.
    UB40 – Red, Red, Wine.
    Vibrations – ‘Cause You’re Mine.
    Velours – I’m Gonna Change.
Bobby Vinton – Mr Lonely and Blue Velvet.
Velvets (N.S. outfit) – I Got To Find Me Somebody.
    Velvet Underground – Sweet Jane.
U2 – With Or Without You.

    Phew – made it!

  9. I’m sorry to do this to Suzanne Vega and Van Halen, but this week I think I’m going to have to go for 13 songs from the same artist – the first group that I fell for completely, my entry into being a proper obsessive music fan. In no particular order except that the first is in my all-time Top 10…

    Ultravox: Vienna
    Ultravox: Reap the Wild Wind
    Ultravox: The Voice
    Ultravox: Hiroshima Mon Amour
    Ultravox: Mr X
    Ultravox: Lament
    Ultravox: Visions in Blue
    Ultravox: New Europeans
    Ultravox: Dangerous Rhythm
    Ultravox: Passing Strangers
    Ultravox: The Thin Wall
    Ultravox: Slow Motion
    Ultravox: Passing Strangers

  10. The seventeen-or-so minutes of marvellous mayhem that is Sister Ray tops my list (I used to be able to play it in my head pretty accurately). It’s followed by the rest of White Light/White Heat, the sweet paindrops of the third album and the classic smack-pop songs from the first.

    U don’t need any uvvers.

  11. Heep heavy & umble .. circle of hands
Van der Graaf plague of lighthouse keepers
Stevie Ray Vaughan’s version of little wing

Vangelis chariots or blade runner stuff or anything with jon singing (pulsar?)

    UFO can’t think of a tune .. rockrolla ?

  12. Thought I’d be able to claim 13 a piece but the “U’s” let me down. So that left me with a mix and match set combining love their work and some one offs:

    Unit 4 + 2 – Concrete and Clay
U2 – Running to Stand Still
    UB40 – One in Ten
    Ultravox – Vienna
    UFO – Doctor, Doctor

Van Halen – Runnin’ With The Devil
    Visage – Fade to Grey
    Vapors – Turning Japanese
Voice of the Beehive – Monsters and Angels
Velvet Revolver – Fall to Pieces
Stevie Ray Vaughan – Pride and Joy
    Ritchie Valens – La Bambara
    Suzanne Vega – Tom’s Diner
    Van Morrison – Brown-Eyed Girl

I know that’s fourteen but it is two letters.

If i could squeeze in one bit of pop then what about Holly Valence and Kiss Kiss.

  13. Here it is – haven’t checked but very probably some duplications! I thought when we got to V it would probably be a kind of duet between Velvet Underground and Suzanne Vega, but I got it down to just 2 of each and 2 from the Unthanks. Just picked things I liked, lots more possibles from Velvets, Vega and Unthanks

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrRVaYF-O4U&list=PL7kF5w3-HpW_t4F9JxGoFYkNWQKBeDGz0

Velvet Underground – All Tomorrow’s Parties
Suzanne Vega – The Queen and the Soldier
    Bobby Vinton – Blue Velvet
    The Verve – Bittersweet Symphony
    The Unthanks – Annachie Gordon
The Velvet Underground – Pale Blue Eyes
Suzanne Vega – Marlene on the Wall
The Undertones – My Perfect Cousin
The Unthanks – Here’s the Tender Coming
The Village People – In The Navy
The Unusual Suspects – Donald MacGillivray
Martha and the Vandellas – Dancing In the Street
Guiseppe Verdi – Nessun Dorma (Pavarotti)

    • Thumbs Up, on all your picks, Suzi.
      Bobby Vinton and
      Matha and Vandellas (Heat Wave!)
      Bring back nice memories
I recall when the songs came out -friends and I bought the 45 rpms (still have ’em – yeah, I’m old)

  14. Una – Angels at my Door … (Thanks shoey)

Dana Valery – You Don’t Know Where Your Interest Lies … (Thanks bish)
Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble – Pride and Joy … classic
Philip Glass Violin Concerto movements 1 & 2 and “Company” movements 1,2,3 & 4 – Takuo Yuasa conducting the ULSTER Orchestra … (shoe-in but hey)

Surprised I don’t have any Suzanne Vega or UFO, but donds to those who do.

    uv vu

    • I don’t know unwound, I shall acquaint myself, dond for Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats, I chose them too, quite like that version of the Mercy Seat too.

      • i’ve tried quite a few times to get an unwound track in the RR list, mainly scarlette. surprisingly no takers yet 😀 they are dark matter in the musical universe.

  21. Not surprised to see SRV, U2 and the Velvets feature prominently but there’s a ton of other stuff I don’t really know, so that’ll keep me busy and out of trouble for awhile 🙂

  22. Really late this week due to circumstances etcetc but as this year is the 40th anniversary of the purchase of my first VU album and the fact that they are my favourite band there may be some bias in that direction !

VU – Sister Ray ( my fav song ever)
The Undertones – Here Comes The Summer
    Underworld – Born Slippy
Luther Vandross – A House is not a Home
    Ultravox – Young Savage
Gene Vincent – Blue Jean Bop

  23. Here’s the DsD U-list that isn’t all UFO:

    All U’s, no lambs

    The Union – Black Monday
Bluesy Classic Rock from singer Pete Shoulder and ex-Thunder guitarist Luke Morley.
    Up-C Down-C Left-C Right-C ABC + Start – Get To The Chopper
Post-rock belter from the most-annoyingly-named band I know.
The Used – A Song To Stifle Imperial Progression
WTF moment from scream-punks with lots of friends in UK music mag editorial circles.
Uriah Heep – Too Scared To Burn
Sorry, Carole, but Abominog is just my UH era, though I was sorry they hadn’t retained John Sloman at that point.
    UFO – Hot ‘N’ Ready
Couldn’t leave them off this list completely, could I?
Ugly Kid Joe – Everything About You
Puerile, but insanely catchy (cf Puddle Of Mudd’s She Hates Me)
    The Undertones – Teenage Kicks
Who said upthread it was impossible to pick anything else over this? Agreed.
    UNKLE – Burn My Shadow
Hey Beth, you do know this, don’t you? Spot that singer!
U2 – When Love Comes To Town
With BB King. I like [parts of] Rattle And Hum even if no one else does!
    Uncle Tupelo – Chickamauga
Had a hard time finding which UT song to fit well into this playlist. Ended up back at the tune I first thought of. D’OH!
    U Can Unlearn Guitar – 58 Days
Sadly not in the YT playlist; I can’t find it on there. Like Nick Cave fronting Kyuss.
And finishing off with the ill-fitting reggae-based pair:
    U-Roy – Tide Is High
I do love a Trojan boxset or three!
UB40 – Many Rivers To Cross
Love ’em or hate ’em, they were a very good gateway to reggae for us middle(-ish)-class white kids who would never have got there ourselves.
