Summertime Soul

I dunno why, but Summer always seems to mean soul to me. I think it is the heat, the sun, it has a languid lazy feel that makes me want to listen to some mellow grooves.

Anyway, here are a dozen tunes that seem to say SUMMER to me, mostly stuff from the 1970s, which was the heyday of blissed out summer soul and lazy funk grooves.

  1. you’re right, there was a lot of summer soul when i was a kid. And funky hippies like Sly and Funkadelic too. Can’t wait to listen, right up my alley and i already know a few of those.

Somebody has to do a summer reggae list – seems that’s the go to summer music in my neck of the woods. Maybe Bish will do some summer pop.

  2. That was just great. Loved Marlene Shaw, that was new to me. Also Minnie Ripperton, never heard that one before and i think that squeaked it as my pick of the set, it was just lovely. So was Love Unlimited, i think all i knew by them was Love’s Theme.

I’m not sure i ever heard Gil Scott-Heron’s version of Inner City Blues either. It was great, and of course a lot more pissed off than Marv’s, who ended up in hippieland on his. Gun to my head, that’s still Marv’s best tune for my money.

    Thanks, Carole!

  3. Not a soul song, but one that always- ushered- in- summer for friends and me back when we were footloose and carefree:

Nat King Cole – Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer
We wished that summer would always be here.
