Now that’s what I call: Elastic bands.

so ONE each from A all the way to Z then a number/a punctuation/a symbols (that includes you saneshane)

The final selection.
You must narrow your choice down to just one.
I’m looking at you picking the best one from your weekly lists (or in odd cases; the one you stupidly forgot to include).

If you put ‘Spill Challenges into the search box – most of the elastic bands weeks come up.

Have fun.

  1. I had a quick look at my YouTube lists last week and knocked up an A-Z. Some vids on the original lists were deleted though and I couldn’t remember what they had been. Long-winded way of saying I’ll get back to you after a long trawl through the archives. I’ll try to keep the “I should have included…..” moments to a minimum. Thanks for setting this up.

  2. I’m gonna be the nosebleed here this week, i’m a bit meh about this part. Because a) feel like i’ve already been here done this, and b) my list is such an utterly predictable classic rockfest. I don’t even need to post a playlist, i know these songs cold and so does everyone else. But if i can only choose one from each week…

Also, i’m putting them in alphabetical order for ease, but that doesn’t especially make it a good playlist order…

ok, i’ll shut up now. Shane, does this mean i can’t have tea with you and Leavey and DsD?

Arctic Monkeys – Fake Tales of San Francisco
Bowie – eenie meenie Changes (Bowie wasn’t on my B list. It was the first letter, i was the last poster, and didn’t quite have the hang of the game yet.)
Clash – This is Radio Clash (can’t believe i had to leave out the Cult and the Cure)
Dylan – My Back Pages (big up to Carole’s Doors tune though.)
Echo and the Bunnymen – Lips Like Sugar
Funkadelic – Get Off Your Ass and Jam (couldn’t choose between Faces and Free, or Focus even)
Grateful Dead – Uncle John’s Band
    Jimi – Voodoo Child
    Chris Isaak – Wicked Game
Jeffferson Airplane – We Can Be Together
    Jorma Kakounen – Genesis
    Led Zep – Immigrant Song
Moody Blues – The Actor (tough to leave off Van Morrison)
    Nirvana – On a Plain
Organized Konfusion – Releasing Hypnotical Gases
Public Enemy – Fight the Power (tie with Parliament – Tear the Roof Off the Sucker)
QOTSA – Song For the Dead
    Rolling Stones – Gimme Shelter
Smashing Pumpkins – Siva (not actually my Pumpkins pick that week, but it is my fave. Kills me to leave off Rod and the Small Faces.)
Teenage Fanclub – Ain’t That Enough (kicking off the Talking Heads – still some pop vengance for leaving off the Cure)
U2 – Gloria (With or Without You was actually my pick that week, either will do.)
Stevie Ray Vaughan – Texas Flood
White Stripes – Seven Nation Army
    X – We’re Desperate
Youngbloods – Get Together (only because i can’t pick just one Neil Young.)
Zombies – Time of the Season
Love Symbol – My Name is Prince

    • perfectly welcome to tea (I will be supplying coffee, vodka and beer too – even wine for those refined types)

I think the discussion in last weeks thread was for those that were having withdrawals might like to narrow their choices down in an A-Z style – I thought I might as well set it up before I have a rest from posting… (going off driving around the country for a couple of weeks so will be without technology for a while)…

  4. My appreciation of the artwork too, the Bobby Moore/Pele image stellar. I missed many of the letters and am just going to do this without aforethought, in ratter-tat-tat style, so it will have songs/music that I like for each letter but not necessarily like most.

    Yazoo, Only You

    • Letters where I found it most difficult to pick just one artist: B, D, M. I imagine that’s likely to be the same for almost everyone…

      • The Doubly-soddin’-Difficult letters chez DsD were A, D, E, J & S.
G, H, M & T would have been pigs as well if it wasn’t for “contractual-obligation” picks that are unlikely to ever be usurped.

I didn’t play [properly] during B-week (I just looked at what I did list that week and why, and a shudder has gone down my spine: I want to give all my girls a hug now but can’t because they’re at DsGran’s & I’m at home.)

  6. So, it is the List Of Lists. How exciting.

Strangely, this selection doesn’t feature three of my favourite bands, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead, mainly because the tracks I chose originally aren’t actually my favourite tracks by those bands. I know that sounds a bit bonkers, but when I was picking the lists originally, I was trying to strike a balance in them, not just pack them with all my fave choons. I’ve also not included any soul stuff and I don’t have any Dylan or Hendrix. Strange omissions perhaps, but I think it is interesting how this process has turned out, with some songs and artists missing and others coming to the fore. There was also the limitation of YouTube which meant that a lot of stuff simply wasn’t available.

However, having said all that, this redacted selection does contain some of my favourite artists and some of my all-time favourite pieces. Therefore, I reckon that overall it is pretty representative sample of what I like to listen to, most of the time.

    The Band – The Weight
    Pixies- Monkey Gone To Heaven
Terry Reid – Seed Of Memory
    King Crimson – Epitaph
Fairport Convention – Who Knows Where The Time Goes
Wishbone Ash – Throw Down The Sword

Frank Zappa – It Must Be A Camel
Little Feat – Rock and Roll Doctor
New Order – Thieves Like Us

    Carole’s_All_Killer,No Filler_list

    • Also, I’ve listed the tracks in the order which the playlists were first posted, beginning with B and ending with N.

  7. Ok, so I am not sure whether coming to this game late was an advantage or disadvantage for this challenge. I have had a go, and come up with a list which I have also put into a youtube playlist, not that I expect anyone will have the time to take a listen to, but if you are struggling to sleep or something like that…it actually flows a little better than I would have expected considering ifs an alphabetical list. I haven’t commented on each track, but happy to answer any questions you may have.

      Dan Zanes – Wonder Wheel

And the playlist can be found here:

  8. After a lot of faffing about I decided that I had chosen the wrong Dylan, Olivia Chaney and Bhundu Boys tracks. I didn’t realise that Manhenga was available on youtube. Neither is my Dylan choice except for a live version that I don’t like nearly as much as the one on the album but c’est la vie innit.
I put the playlist in a different order for the sake of variety, flow and having the same reggae track interpreted twice in a row.
Here’s the selection in A-Z or rather A-8 order:

A Althia and Donna – Uptown Top Ranking
    B Bhundu Boys – Manhenga
    C Olivia Chaney – Holiday
D Bob Dylan – Simple Twist of Fate
    E Earthling – First Transmission
    F Fairground Attraction – Allelujah
    G Good Shoes – Morden
H Half Man Half Biscuit – Paintball’s Coming Home
    I Janis Ian – At 17
J Etta James – These Foolish Things
    K Katzenjammer – God’s Great Dust Storm
L Peggy Lee – Is That All There Is?
    M Matching Mole – O Caroline
N Nico – My Only Child
    O Sinead O’Connor – Three Babies
P Lee Perry – Baffling Smoke Signals
Q Queen Tiney & the Aggrovators – Natty Dread Time Dub
R Ramones – My Brain is Hanging Upside Down
S Siouxsie and the Banshees – Helter Skelter
    T T-Tex – Jewel
    U Undertones – Teenage Kicks
V Velvet Underground – I’ll be Your Mirror
W Wreckless Eric – Whole Wide World
    X X-Ray Spex – I Live Off You
    Y Yazoo – Winter Kills
Z Zion Train – Dance of Life
    123$% 808 State – Pacific State

    and here is my choob-list

Quick, man, press “post” before you change your bloody mind again.

  9. Given the amount of care and attention (and art) that shane put into this exercise, my haphazard response and total absence of song selections and playlists was a tad shoddy. So, in order of their original appearance, here are my lettersongs:

The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever
Pavement – Rattled By The Rush
    Rolling Stones – Ruby Tuesday
    The Kinks – Sunny Afternoon
Robert Wyatt – The Sight Of The Wind
Captain Beefheart – My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains
    Roy Orbison – Pretty Woman
Young Rascals – Groovin’ On A Sunday Afternoon
Shrimp Boat – What Do You Think Of Love
    Grateful Dead – Jack Straw
    Julian Joseph – Tyrannosaurus Rex
Bob Dylan – Simple Twist Of Fate
Kirsty MacColl – Dancing In Limbo
Richard Thompson – Ghosts in the Wind
    John Adams – Harmonielehre
    Eleventh Dream Day – Rubberband
    Fairport Convention – Matty Groves
The Velvet Underground – Sister Ray
The Incredible String Band – Koeeoaddi There
Jimi Hendrix – The Wind Cries Mary
Frank Zappa – It Must Be A Camel
Little Feat – Cold, Cold, Cold
    Nico – Evening Of Light

And here they are in a playlist (apart from Dylan and Joseph, and the remaining five parts of Harmonielehre).

Thanks again, shane, and enjoy your trip! Coming anywhere near Manchester?

    • I must admit I never thought anyone else would stick Sister Ray up for the letter V but it appears I was wrong so huge donds for that Chris

    • no, not really near Manchester – Portmeirion** is probably the closest we’ll get to you there! Then we head down south.

We are off to see friends in Wales and see some alternative building places – but as I’m there – I’m insisting on seeing **the Village… as the boys will be spoilt rotten for castles – that’s my touristy thing to do.

      • I’m sure you’ll have great fun at Portmeirion: it is enjoyably weird.
Try to make time for the (relatively) nearby Blaenau Ffestiniog railway if you can (it’s still running decades after I last used it!): another touristy thing, but well worth it.

  10. An impossible task obviously but made easier for me by excluding all jazz and almost all my favourite soul tunes leaving a list from the ‘pop/rock’ genres which is not necessarily a bad thing !

  12. It’s funny, but a week or so ago I created alternate B and P lists to the ones I posted originally. I had the idea of revisiting the lists I’d made at the time.

To be honest, I think that my revised lists are better than the originals and it is interesting to see that in both cases there are songs on both versions of the lists.

Unfortunately, the original lists have deleted tracks, so I am not sure what I missed from the first time around because for the first few weeks I didn’t keep a copy of what I’d posted. I suppose I could check back, but I’m more than happy with the B and P songs on the list of lists.

  15. Adding my appreciation for the artwork, Shane.

I didn’t contribute every week, so my list might be interesting (to me anyway).

If I get a chance, I’ll do it when I get home tomorrow.

In other news, and excuse my needing to be cryptic, has everyone provided a suitable RResponse to the email they received? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, email me or BB.

    See you tomorrow.

  17. Haven’t referred back to the original lists so there maybe some new ones here (definitely is for G).

So in spite of possibly upstaging shane’s T party with a rock oriented list here goes:

    A) Alter Bridge – oh my god how difficult is it to choose one track and not upset DsD, well here goes Find The Real ( tho’ it could be One Day Remains!)
    B) Band of Skulls – Bruises

    D) Damned – Eloise (no contest)
    E) Echo & The Bunnymen – Lips Like Sugar

    G) New entry thanks to last Guru stint – Gov’t Mule – Lola, Leave Your Light On

    I) Icicle Works – Understanding Jane

  18. Firstly, thank you for all the excellent travel, history, automobile and music articles on here recently. really good reading.

However, I have distraught umlauts and accents, etcetera crying on my shoulder.

Thus, The Equal Rights for Minority Alphabets Society (ER… MAS) – Nordic Affiliation (NAff) brings you:

Magnus Östrom – Mary Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (Jazz: ES Trio fans might like. But this track is a bit hotel-bar-for-singles-who-haven’t-copped-off sounding)

Ásgeir – King And Cross (Somewhere between Bon Iver and Teitur and Jens Lekman. – Ho! Ho! They’ll have to listen now, just to say, “It’s not!”)

Kristofer Åström – The Wild (Boy/girl vocals: indie folk)
Æ & dem feat Eva Trones: Tida e knapp (A shoreline song, would be a good RR theme. What? Oh! Anyway it’s got a lovely undertow to it. Boy/girl vocals)

Alexander Öhman – Hjärtat Är En Tyst Och Stilla Bar (Like a softer, more sympathetic Kent. There’s an English version out there – included)

    Äänijännite: Thrust (Finnish electro-funksters)

Åbe 2 – Hetskt (Absolutely influenced by Sonic Youth’s Confusion Is Sex and Kill Yr Idols period and is therefore the best thing on this list)

Ääni Loppu – Pojat oli velkaa (Introverted Finnish rap, early days yet for this band but a nice alternative to what’s out there)

Änglagård – Saknadens fullhet (Normally they write epic proggy/psych tinged stuffs, but this is short and sweet and er not representative at all)

Årabrot – Fumble Finger (Metal and rock warped out of shape. Might appeal to those of a gothic persuasion

Ø (Mika Vainio) – Vastus (One of Pan Sonic, so those who like their toe-tapping melodies had better stay clear, though this is ready for a sleeker remix)

Nils Økland – Månelyst (This is what happens when you spend too much time looking at mountains, seas and forests and … well, nature in general)

Äänipää “Watch Over Stillness/Matters Principle” (This is what happens when you want to annoy t’fuckoutotneighbours – a Pan Sonic and SUNN O))) party-on Garth collabo)

  19. Beautiful pictures, Shane! I love them. It’s like a glimpse into very strange windows on a very odd building. Can I play if I haven’t been playing all along?

  20. 19 re-posts from the individual weeks, 2 song changes from the artists picked first time round, 5 letters I didn’t play.

    $ – 500 Miles To Memphis – Sunshine In A Shot Glass.

    A – Audioslave – Set It Off.
