More new sounds for you this week. Please let me have your comments below, along with any recommendations for new music you’d like to share. If anyone is thinking of sending us a link, Youtube or Soundcloud are preferred because it’s easier to make a playlist – but I’m grateful for all contributions, just sorry we can’t feature them all. Today we start with the Youtube playlist above, details as follows:
Electric Pyramid – Rome: British-Italian four-piece Electric Pyramid have just revealed the video for their new single “Rome”. They supported Queen on tour in Europe earlier this year and are about to play a London headline show at Notting Hill Arts Club on December 5th. Inspired by the likes of Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin and QOTSA.
Royal Canoe – Walk Out on the Water: This is from Royal Canoe’s new album “Something Got Lost Between Here and the Orbit”out now on Nevado Music. The video was directed by Dan Huiting who has created music videos for Bon Iver, Colin Stetson, Sylvan Esso, Little Scream, Hiss Golden Messenger and more. He has also worked on documentaries for Volcano Choir, Robyn, Bon Iver, Tallest Man on Earth, Poliça and Damien Jurado. Upcoming European tour dates include Jan 31 – Manchester, @ The Castle Hotel and 1 Feb – London, @ The Slaughtered Lamb. My favourite this week.
Angelicaa – Nail Polish: Angelica has just released her debut EP ‘& So…’ with the lead single ‘Nail Polish’. The debut EP is available to stream and purchase here:http://smarturl.it/3dv2ix My second favourite!
Apryll Aileen – Hey Sugar: Canadian singer Apryll Aileen is releasing her debut album ‘Savannah Soul’ in a few weeks time. You can read more about her here: http://www.apryllaileen.com/media/
Opvs & broski – Crazy: Previously featured on Sounds on Sunday 3 with “Stranded”, the New York City duo is back with “Crazy.” They say: “Nostalgic Sean Paul vocals are the precursor to a wildly big drop, with a middle-eastern sounding lead… panning from your left to right ears guaranteeing that you’ll go Crazy.” Soundcloud playlist above.
Parekh and Singh – Ghost: The latest single from previously featured Kolkata-based dream pop duo Parekh & Singh,called “Ghost,” from the band’s just-released debut LP Ocean, on Peacefrog Records (Little Dragon, Jose Gonzalez, Moodymann). “Led by acoustic guitar and sashay-ed drums, “Ghost” floats serenely as Parekh’s ethereal voice meditates nostalgically on traces of his former self, warning “I’m partially a ghost / don’t you get too close.”” Soundcloud playlist above.
Desert Dusk – Illusion: According to their Facebook page, “Desert Dusk are an electronic rock band – riffs & sounds that swing between QOTSA and Gorillaz, and Radiohead and Liars.” Since their debut EP in October 2015, they’ve been back in the studio recording their follow up single, Illusion. Orouni – Live session from French streaming platform Findspire – Orouni are from Paris, and have a melodic pop sound with influences ranging from The Kinks to Leonard Cohen. The magazine Technikart premiered their live session and said: “Orouni could be Neil Hannon’s cousin: same sense for melody, same taste for carefully crafted arrangements, same English elegance.” Irish blog SWIT (Super World Indie Tunes) called them “a class act“.
Still Eighteen, originally from Toronto, feature Joey (lead singer and guitar player) who was a previous lead singer of well-known Canadian band Platinum Blonde. Still Eighteen was recently hired to play regularly at the world’s largest Hard Rock Hotel and the audience’s enthusiastic response prompted them to release an EP “Bullets to Dust“. Electric Pyramid – RomeI have to say that I didn’t hear much in the way of Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin or QOTSA influences here. It was OK, but it didn’t enthuse me greatly.
Royal Canoe – Walk Out on the Water I didn’t particularly like this one. Not really my thing.
Angelicaa – Nail Polish This is better. I like this one. I like it a lot.
Apryll Aileen – Hey Sugar Not sure. It sounds like something that you would come across on Later with Jools Holland. I don’t dislike it, but it isn’t really exciting me either.
Opvs & broski – Crazy Yeah, not bad. It is a bit repetitive and I think I want more weirdness before I’m going to go Crazy.
Parekh and Singh – GhostOoh, this is nice. Lovely laid-back, slightly jazzy vibe. This is the best one so far.
Desert Dusk – Illusion I can’t make my mind up. There are bits I like a lot, the instrumental ones mainly. I don’t like the vocals, though. The singer is doing too much of what I always think of as “Indie Declaiming”.
Orouni – Live session from French streaming platform Findspire I don’t get the “English elegance”. They sould like a French band singing a French song in English. It is perfectly pleasant but a bit underpowered. Actually, when the trumpet comes along, it gets better. I think that the second song it a lot better. It has more of a dynamic about it.
Still Eighteen This is very radio-friendly power pop, isn’t it? Well-crafted songs with lots of hooks. Yeah, good stuff.
