Happy New Year! Thanks to everyone who sent earworms on the theme of “new beginnings”, and apologies to Shoegazer for omitting Dragonette from the Christmas earworms last week – never mind, it’s still appropriate: “No regrets / Not for a moment / Facing forward / Next year’s golden.” If you have an Earworm you’d like to share, please send an .mp3 or link to email@example.com, together with a few lines about why you’ve chosen it. Meanwhile, here’s to 2018!
Dragonette – Merry Xmas (Says Your Text Message) – Shoegazer: Not one for the kiddies.
Mavis Staples feat. Bonnie Raitt – Turn Me Around – Ravi Raman: This was my #1 pick for Spill year until I decided to go all Indian.
Lost Horizons – The Places We’ve Been – afictionhabit: It’s reflective and totally gorgeous. Happy New Year!
Ornette Coleman – Turnaround – abahachi: I’ve started having jazz guitar lessons again, for the first time with a serious jazz musician (albeit a bass player); my ability to remember anything gets worse and worse, ditto my ability to find time and energy to practice, but I’m already learning a lot – including that there’s a whole Ornette Coleman album I’ve never actually heard, including this classic blues number which I’m now happily transposing into Bb and slowing down so I can actually play it.
Delroy Wilson – Better Must Come – goneforeign: This was popular in Jamaica in ’72, there was an election that year and Michael Manley chose it for his theme song; he won!
Jimmy Cliff – Better Days – goneforeign: about the same period.
Ella Fitzgerald – Things Are Looking Up – goneforeign: Ella, what’s to say.
Cannonball Adderley – Things Are Getting Better – goneforeign: Getting Better was a very popular jazz hit in the ’70’s, catchy instrumental.
Led Zeppelin – Going to California – AliM: “Made up my mind to make a new start / Going To California with an aching in my heart / Someone told me there’s a girl out there / With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.” We can but dream.
